12 Some steep climbs persist throughout this

attractive cycle but the height gained presents some first-rate views, predominantly across East Renfrewshire but also as far as Ben Lomond some forty miles to the north. The route leaves from Clarkston where quieter roads travel a little off the beaten track into Busby and then into the lovely village of Carmunnock. The cycling is terrific as great roads pass through Thorntonhall, Waterfoot and into Newton Mearns. Gradual descents, along busier stretches of road, lead back to Clarkston.

1. From Clarkston Railway Station, turn right, descend Busby Road (A727) then turn left into Mearns Road. Follow this through Clarkston for 1 mile, turning left into Flenders Road just after Cathcart Castle Golf Club. After a short, steep climb, Flenders Road descends by Greenbank Gardens then undulates through open countryside to Eaglesham Road (B767).

2. 2.25miles/3.5km Turn left, follow this busy road, going straight through a roundabout at Williamwood High School. Take the first right into Newford Grove, cycle by the school, turn right into the 3rd cul-de-sac then descend four steps. Turn left over
