10 The quiet roads above Barrhead offer great cycling
high over the town with exemplary views of the local countryside as well as possibly the finest views of Glasgow’s city sprawl, the conspicuous plateau of the Campsie Fells and the big, brutish Southern Highlands. This cycle makes its way quickly out of Barrhead via a very steep climb, with sumptuous views opening out promptly. Country roads then travel through marvellous open countryside and by the likes of Walton Dam and the striking outline of Duncarnock Fort (known locally as The Craigie), the fort on its summit dating back to Prehistoric times. A shorter route avoiding Barrhead town centre starts at Balgray Reservoir.
1. Facing the entrance of Barrhead Railway Station on Carlibar Road, turn right and follow the road down to Glen Street. Turn right, cycle to a mini roundabout and turn left into Church Road. The road climbs gradually, straight through a roundabout, to a set of traffic lights at Barrhead Main Street (A736). If you start at Balgray carpark turn right out of the carpark and left at St Lukes High School after half a mile 5 ways junction is reached at point 3 on the map.
