tainability-based amenities, a testament to which is the Virginia Beach Convention Center, the first in the coun- try to be certified as LEED® Gold for Existing Buildings. Renewable materials were incorporated throughout construc- tion of the facility, and an energy efficient glass system was integrated into building design to limit ultra violet light penetra- tion and harness solar energy in the large pre-function spaces.

A sustainable landscape design allows the facility to minimize its impact on one of the area’s most important resources - the local waterways, and green cleaning techniques are employed throughout the facility. An active recycling and compost- ing program helps minimize facility waste, and the building’s food and bever- age operator donates food overages to local homeless shelters and uses bio- degradable and recyclable material in their concession stands.

Unique Features: At the convention center’s entrance, a soaring, nautical glass-curtain wall appears to float in pools of water both inside and outside the building. Guests walk across wooden boardwalks to access the building. A “porch-like” venue for an outdoor experience is adjacent to an enclosed pre-function area in front of the ballroom.

From the 10-story observation deck, atten- dees can view the oceanfront skyline, as well as the incredible air-mastery of the F/A-18 Super Hornets based at Naval Air Station Oceana.

Also, the convention center staff main- tains an on site garden, where fresh pro- duce is grown and harvested for incorpo- ration into dishes prepared for events.
