Parish councils are beating vandals thanks to Barkston Parish councils across the country are beating vandals thanks to a new range of superstrong street furniture developed by Sustainable Options. The bench, bin and table have been developed from recycled plastic in response to rising complaints from local authorities. The heavy equipment, much sturdier than wood when in place, is rot, rust, chemical and vandal proof. Graffiti just wipes off the recycled plastic benches and tables, making it perfect for

dozens of environments. Sustainable Options’ is part of Barkston Plastics and its products are now used in a variety of ways including plastic fencing for heavily waterlogged environments, the Environment Agency is one of its cus- tomers, and even funky furniture.

 LIFE’S A BEACH AT RIVERSLEY PARK

Children in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, are enjoying the delights of naturally inspired play thanks to Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council’s vision to improve an existing play space at Riversley Park and the design from landscape architects, The Beckett Company. The council called in the expertise of Timberplay to install one of the main components of its play equip- ment, the timber pyramid tower with its connecting platforms and bridges. Because of its individual shape,

the pyramid, with its metal tip reflecting the sunlight, provides an eye-catching feature amongst the mature trees of the park, drawing attention to the playground. t 0114 282 34 74 www.timberplay.com

Levolux takes the limelight in Cardiff Following a £22.5 million redevelopment, the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama in Cardiff is proud of its new world leading facil- ities, including a 450 capacity Concert Hall wrapped in attractive Timber Fins, courtesy of Levolux. The Concert Hall is particularly impressive, with its imposing structure clad with rows of vertical Timber Fins. The Fins measure 185mm wide by 44mm thick and are 2.3 metres in length. The completed

installation comprises 2,306 Timber Fins, machined in Western Red Cedar. Developed to provide differential weathering, concentric rows of Timber Fins are fixed at alternating angles, creating a contrasting aesthetic, which appears to change as you pass around and enter the building. The application of the Fins sig- nificantly reduces solar heat gain within the building.

Permeable paving for amenity There is more to concrete block permeable paving than just meeting the latest legislative demands to help reduce flood- ing, says Interpave, the Precast Concrete Paving and Kerb Association. It can also provide a controlled source of clean water as a sustainable amenity for landscaping, ecology and water harvesting. As a most versatile sustainable drainage system (SUDS) technique, concrete block permeable paving is particularly useful as a source control at the head of the SUDS management train. It reduces peak rate, total volume and frequency of rainwater runoff, and is also effective at

removing water-borne pollution. It also offers the opportunity of a gradual supply of treated water, something that Bob Bray of Robert Bray Associates exploits for amenity, harvesting and habitat enhancement in recent projects.
