Interiors With over 50 years’ experience in the manufacture of acoustic floor coverings, selling over 4,000,000m2 worldwide per year,
Forbo Flooring Systems is ideally qualified to offer a RIBA certified CPD seminar entitled ‘Specifying Acoustic Flooring: The Latest Building Regulations & Best Practice’. The seminar examines the impact of noise pollution and explores the role that acoustic flooring can play in sound reduction and the creation of more comfortable and harmonious interiors. Attendees will enhance their knowledge of current Regulations and Standards to be considered when specifying acoustic flooring and the specific performance criteria to look for when specifying for mainstream and more demanding applications in healthcare, education and other public buildings. With reference to products found within Forbo’s extensive range of resilient floor cov- erings, the seminar demonstrates how enhanced acoustic performance can be combined with superior levels of appearance retention, indentation and scratch resistance, dimensional stability, bacteriostatic characteristics, increased slip resistance and anti-static control properties to meet specific requirements. Environmental issues and whole of life costings are also considered in detail. Having attended this CPD seminar attendees will be able to make more informed, effective and sus- tainable choices and comply with relevant Regulations and Standards whenever and wherever acoustic flooring is required.

Encasement on track with new Gateshead Stadium upgrade
As part of the £multi-million refurbishment and upgrading of Gateshead International Stadium, decorative ‘Circa’ column casings from Encasement are being used to conceal structural columns of up to 7.0 metres high in the sports centre’s stylish new reception and main entrance foyer. Within the spacious ground floor area and the first floor gallery level, all of the structural columns have been concealed by 350mm and 500mm diameter pre-formed plywood column casings from Encasement, finished in brushed aluminium Formica DecoMetal®
laminate, which adds to the interior’s contempo-
rary design. Encasement supplied and installed 16 column casings for the project, six of which stand 7.0 metres high and are located adjacent to the building’s striking curved glass façade and main entrance, while the remaining ten casings stand 3.0 metres high and are situated on both the ground and upper gallery floors. To contrast with the brushed aluminium finish, each column casing is fitted with a highly polished 150mm high stainless steel collar at the base together with the jointing and infill strips, which enhance the aesthetics of the finished installation. Encasement’s MD, Martin Taylor, explained: “Gateshead Stadium is probably one of the best known venues in the UK and is highly regarded in international athletics across the world, so it’s especially pleasing for us to be involved with such an important project that has improved the facilities for competitors, spectators, students and visitors. By supplying and installing the column casings, we were not only able to integrate with the contractor’s construction programme but also take complete respon- sibility for our products from the initial order right through to the final unveiling.”
All change in toileting facilities...
The drive towards the inclusion of people with a disability continues, and as a nation we also face an increasingly ageing population. Therefore, the need to provide accessible toilet facilities, especially in public environments, is growing. The need is being met, with the development of the concept of Changing Places toilets for people who need the help of at least one carer; a concept that has already become good practice under British Standards. Through the efforts of the Changing Places campaign, sponsored by Total Hygiene, already almost 300 Changing Places toilets have been installed across the UK, enabling dis- abled people to participate in day-to-day life. A Changing Places toilet includes a height adjustable adult-sized changing bench, a tracking hoist system or mobile hoist, adequate space in the changing area for the disabled person and up to two carers, a peninsular toilet with room either side for the carers, a screen or curtain to allow the disabled person and carer some privacy, wide tear off paper roll to cover the bench, a large waste bin for disposable pads, a non-slip floor and a washbasin.
