It is 1906 the Guildford Union Workhouse, visible for miles, hovers over the town; a dreadful warning of the fate that will befall all who fail to find work, fall sick, become lame or feeble of mind it is to the Workhouse they must go. Far better than the asylum but for those who can still earn a crust - the able-bodied beggar - it is the casual ward, for he deserves no reward for his idleness and she none for her own stupidity.
This is no stately home no playground for the rich and famous but the most innovative on-going heritage project, the Vagrants and Casuals Ward of the Guildford Union Workhouse will always have a very real story to tell.
