1946 Mary Reddick Welsh sends her latest news from Maine. “I have just published my first children’s book called ‘Sammy the Little Green Snake Who Wanted to Fly.’ It should be out in a few weeks. I found my interest in snakes at Chadwick when Harry Higgins tried to scare me during my sophomore year by putting them in my desk. Instead I made friends with one, a nice king snake who lived in my bottom drawer until Quinny (Gladys Quinlin) gently told me he would be better off in the wild. I am a feisty old lady at 83 years old now. Joe and I have been married 57 years and are still enjoying the Maine life … except that it is getting ‘civilized.’ Alas, we now have a Walmart! Also, we have lots more people and traffic. Hope all is well on ‘Te Hill.’ I spent many happy years there.”
1950 Sean Kelly writes from Cape Cod, Massachusetts: “Sales of my 2010 book, ‘Chasing Chaos: a Foreign Correspondent’s Memoir’ have been brisk, but it seems unlikely to become a best seller. Nonetheless, I encourage former classmates to follow the adventures of a Chadwick lad as he faces a hostile world and survives to tell the tale.”
1952 John Harding provides the following update: “While working as a tri-shaw (bicycle powered rickshaw) driver in Singapore, I decided that I was not doing justice to my education at Chadwick. My wife, May Chu, and I moved back to America, where we wrote a book, ‘Escape
58 THE COMPASS
from Paradise from Tird World to First.’ It has been ranked No. 1 by Amazon UK for books on divorce as recently as July 2011. My wife and I are very happy to be in America.”
1953 From Peter Davis, “I have a brand new grandchild, my fiſth, a girl named Emerson Avery Davis, born to my youngest son, Jesse, and his wonderful wife, Lisa. Tey live in Altadena but are about to move to Berkeley, which they’ve been aiming at for a long time. Emerson joins my other California grandchildren, Ryder and Tess, 11 and 8, as well as their New York counterparts, Lily and Gracie, also 11 and 8. Tink there might be some competition going on between my oldest sons?”
1956 Doug Jones reminisces, “I always had fun when we went to Badger Pass each year skiing. We went to Yosemite last October for our anniversary and went up to Badger Pass. We found the room with my name and [the names of] other classmates on the big wooden skis for racing the downhill course. Te park is not the same as it was in the 40s-70s. My uncle was the head park ranger when the father of Nancy Proctor Pesman and Peggy Proctor Dean ’58 was president of the Curry Company.”
1958 Jane Sansome Boyer reports, “In May of 2010, I received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Eastern Kentucky University. Te president’s introduction, which he wrote himself, began with ‘fierce and dedicated advocate for children in need.’”
Sher Denton sends the following update: “Included is a picture of my 70th birthday party with my son, Scott Conover Distelhurst, who is 43 this year. He is a street musician at Hollywood Studios, Disney in Orlando, Florida.”
Marc Frederic writes: “I have retired from a 42-year career as a financial adviser to follow my passion for creative writing, which ranges from light verse to serious prose and entails a variety of genres in the interim. In 2011, I published ‘Beyond the Great Oak Doors,’ a fantasy adventure novel for children (ages 10 and above), as well as ‘Timbo’s Tale of Transition’ (includes CD), a short fictional tale for all ages based on a true story of two elephants. It explains how death need not be feared. It is an upliſting story that contains a message of comfort and peace; an enchanting tale that looks at life and death from an unusual perspective.” Marc and his loving wife, Gaylan, live on the beach in Redondo Beach and travel extensively to visit their five grandchildren and explore the world.
From Susan Loew Greenberg: “Busy year for us! Middle grandson, Jacob Wong, graduated from high school in Duxbury, Massachusetts, and is now a first-year cadet at the U.S. Air Force Academy. His oldest sister, Michelle, is off to Italy for the first semester of her junior year at University of New Hampshire, and youngest sister, Elizabeth (the only one leſt at home), is now in the eighth grade. We have not done much traveling lately but have had fun with Alan’s three grandchildren, twins Alyssa and Andrew, 6, and Zachary, 10. We are lucky to have them living close to us in Los Angeles. We have enjoyed many meals with Susan and
