DEAR CHADWICK COMMUNITY MEMBERS,

It is my great pleasure to write about the wonderful things that are going on at Chadwick International (CI) this year. Now in the second year of operation, CI is in excellent shape to continue to deliver on the educational promise that Margaret Chadwick began in San Pedro 76 years ago. We have a tremendous educational leadership team, highly capable, experienced, and dedicated teachers, a hard-working staff, diligent, earnest, and respectful students, and a supportive and invested parent body. Together, the Chadwick International community is committed to living out the mission and the core values in the same manner as those on the Palos Verdes campus, and in this sense, we are truly “one school.” We remain in a growth phase at Chadwick International.

We are now at roughly 480 students in year two, up from approximately 270; we doubled our faculty at the same time, with close to 80 faculty members on board this year. We inaugurated a pre-Kindergarten section this year, and we anticipate growing the size of pre-K by at least one section for the 2012-13 school year. Furthermore, we added Grade 8 this year so that we now have a fully enrolled Middle School offering grades 6-8. It has been exciting to see the Middle School thriving with three grades, with faculty members and students creating a unique and valuable program and community. Te admissions cycle began in October, and we are

anticipating a robust applicant pool this year. We are about to begin hiring new faculty for the 2012-13 school year, and we are enthused about the prospect of recruiting new talent to complement our highly capable faculty. We will be recruiting teachers at international recruiting fairs in Australia, Tailand, England, and the United States. Tere is considerable “buzz” in the international school community about Chadwick International, and we have been receiving a steady stream of applications from highly qualified potential candidates. Our educational program at Chadwick International

continues to develop and flourish. Te Elementary School, ably led by Principal Shelly Wille and Assistant Principal Jacquie Cameron, delivers a progressive educational program that is very much in line with Margaret Chadwick’s philosophy of experiential and interdisciplinary education. Te International Baccalaureate’s Primary Years Program (PYP) revolves around six cross-disciplinary themes, and students are engaged in projects and other inquiry-based approaches that relate to central questions posed in the unit. Such “Units of Inquiry” incorporate all the disciplines, from language arts to performing arts to social studies. Middle School Principal Craig Williamson is working

closely with a cadre of talented educators on the Middle School academic program. As in the Elementary School, the Middle School curriculum is interdisciplinary in its approach, focused on depth of inquiry rather than memorization of discrete facts, and centered on students, rather than teachers.

Te focus on character development permeates both divisions at Chadwick International. For example, the Middle School Core Value Assembly recognizes students who model the core values in word and deed; individual classrooms display the Honor Code, and student work reflects our commitment to the core values. Students are actively encouraged to discover the giſts and

talents that each of them possesses, and there are plenty of opportunities for them to do so. Our physical education staff worked proactively to form an athletic league for students in Grades 3-8. Named the Korean International School Athletic Council (KISAC), this league comprises five schools, and students play in weekend round-robin soccer matches known as “jamborees.” Students will participate in swimming, basketball, and track this year. Chadwick International students also have “exploratory” periods built into the school day in Grades 1-8, giving them opportunities to pursue activities from rock band to jewelry making to photography. All students in these grade levels take visual art, music, physical education, and drama each week. For those who want more individualized instruction, there are programs offered aſter school including soccer, tennis, robotics, instrumental music, and swimming. CI Director of Outdoor Education Jessica Lichtig-Groom

is in the process of planning the first-ever Chadwick International outdoor education trip, a spring trip for our eighth-graders. A hallmark of Chadwick’s educational experience, this trip and others to follow will provide wonderful opportunities for students to gain a deeper understanding of themselves and their classmates by spending time together in the wilderness. We are very pleased with all that has transpired thus far

this year, and we are even more excited by what is to come. It is an exciting time of growth and development as we seek to recreate the enduring attributes of Chadwick School on our international campus.

Sincerely,

Jeff Mercer Headmaster Chadwick International School
