Betty Elliott Field Strauss is a longtime friend of both Chadwick School and the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Although she grew up in Long Beach with her family,

Strauss remembers visiting the Portuguese Bend area at a very young age with her father and his close friend, Donald Ayres. (Ayres worked closely with Frank Vanderlip, who donated the property upon which Chadwick School is currently located.) As a result, Strauss’ love for Portuguese Bend was established very early on. Strauss and her brother, Daniel Elliott ’49 (now

deceased), attended Colonial School of Long Beach through the sixth grade. Tereaſter, she attended the local Long Beach schools through high school, while her brother attended Chadwick School. Aſter high school, Strauss went off to Stanford

University, where she majored in psychology and minored in English. However, her roots and love of the area brought her back to Palos Verdes. She ultimately settled in Portuguese Bend, raised her family there, and has lived in the same home for the past 56 years. Strauss decided to send her own children to Chadwick

School, citing the “smaller classes and individualized attention” as two things that were very important to her when choosing a school. Two of her children, Hale Field ’70 and Darcy Field ’72 (deceased), graduated from the school.

In addition, Strauss served Chadwick School faithfully for many years and in many different capacities, including a term as a Chadwick School trustee and as the Chadwick Parents’ Association president. Strauss’ two granddaughters, Bria Biesman-Simons

’08, a WOW who currently attends Scripps College, and Catalina Biesman-Simons ’13, continue the family’s legacy at Chadwick. Catalina, a future Chadwick WOW, is participating in the Student Year Abroad Program, studying this year in Zaragoza, Spain. A philanthropist by nature, Strauss has a long history

of community service in the local and greater Los Angeles area. She has chaired and served on a multitude of local organizations, and was one of the founders of Save our Coastline, an organization that worked tirelessly to found the City of Rancho Palos Verdes. She was also a founding board member of the Banning Residence Museum. Finally, Strauss is a long-time committee member and former president of the Peninsula Committee for Children’s Hospital, and still works annually at the Portuguese Bend Horse Show.

Frances J. and Frank L. Johnson Legacy Society

Te Frances J. and Frank L. Johnson Legacy Society was established in 1996 by Frank Johnson ’47 and Jacqueline Johnson Kehle ’56 in memory of their parents’ unfailing love and support for Chadwick School. Entirely comprised of planned giſts from Chadwick alumni and other community members, it continues to be one of Chadwick’s most important revenue sources, supporting the very foundation of our school and ensuring Chadwick’s strength and stability for generations to come. Te Johnson Legacy Society is one of the easiest ways

for those who have been especially inspired by their Chadwick School experience to establish their own legacy with the school. We hope that you will take a moment to consider becoming a member, and help us to build upon the foundation that the Johnson Family established for our school.

Have you included Chadwick in your estate plans? Tank you! Please consider notifying the school’s development office. It is our sincere desire to honor and recognize you in the appropriate manner. Your giſt may also inspire others to think about a similar giſt arrangement. For more information about making a bequest or any other type of giſt to Chadwick, please contact Anna Lucier at (310) 377-1543, ext. 4033 or at alucier@chadwickschool.org.
