31 LET’S KEEP WORKING TOGETHER

BSPF Managing Director Chris Hayes urges current non members to join BISHTA and / or SPATA, not only to enjoy a variety of benefits, but also to show your commitment to helping root out the minority of ‘cowboys’ in our industry

A

s I reflect on the past 12 months, I am delighted to report on a number of achievements we have made this year including the collaborative work being undertaken by SPATA and BISHTA members to raise the standard of information available to companies and consumers. There has also been a positive sharing of ideas at seminars and meetings held in various locations around the country and these gatherings have provided great networking opportunities to meet new business contacts. Nowhere is this networking more obvious than at SPATEX and I look forward to seeing many of you in Brighton in February when the industry can get together again to exhibit and discuss new products, network, display its finest pool and spa installations and find out the latest news to affect our industry. The latest developments on the 2012 Show can be found on page 36.

In this issue, there is also the latest update on the recent Focus Group meeting held in Telford with SPATEX exhibitors.

ways to provide more information to the trade and the consumer. A range of factsheets have been produced covering topics as diverse as access to discounted British Standards, technical advice, alternative dispute resolution services and water quality records. The Homeowners Guide has been revised and updated and this invaluable consumer publication is available to download as a pdf from the SPATA website. Both SPATA and BISHTA Standards will also continue to be reviewed and the promotion of ethical business remains a priority to maximise the chances that customers will be looked after properly. Given the problems faced when companies behave unethically, I would urge current non members to join BISHTA and / or SPATA, not only to enjoy a variety of benefits, but also to show your commitment to helping root out the minority of ‘cowboys’ that operate in our industry. Please call the office for further information on membership, or if you would like me to make an appointment to come and visit you before, or at SPATEX.

As we continue to grow larger in numbers, this will strengthen the voice of the industry in both the UK and overseas. Our industry is represented on a large number of bodies at home and abroad. Domestically, two of the key ones include the BSi Committee (British Standards) and the Swimming Forum. Working with a number of partners from the wet leisure industry, this provides a great opportunity for the BSPF to discuss topical matters and find ways of improving the profile of the industry. Some of the other bodies attending the Swimming Forum include British Swimming / ASA, STA (swimming teaching and life saving), RoSPA, RLSS UK (life saving) and the British Swimming Coaches Association. There are also education bodies such as the English Schools Swimming Association and the Association for Physical Education. In Europe, 2012 promises to be a very exciting year for our industry as the BSPF accepts the Presidency of the European Union of Swimming Pool and Spa Associations (EUSA), thus bringing ever closer ties with Europe. There has been a sharing of good ideas between

the current 10 members of EUSA and the friendships and understanding forged in this group have allowed for a greater speed of integration when dealing with the new European norms being developed for domestic pools and spas by the Technical Committee (TC 402) dealing with this area. TC 402 encompasses 31 countries across the wider Europe and good progress is being made in the Working Groups WG1 and WG2 on Domestic Pools and it is anticipated that work will begin on Domestic Spas with WG3 in the New Year. Before finishing this article, I would like to acknowledge the support from the trade who, despite a difficult economic climate, continue to support the various industry bodies, reaffirming the value of membership of either SPATA and / or BISHTA.

My final words in this issue are to say a massive thank you to the many people that directly assist me every day in my role. Jan Hardy, Alison Jones, Helen Mulingani, Harry Crockford and Karen Goddard, based at the Andover offices make a vital contribution to the smooth running of our day to day operation and their support and professionalism is greatly appreciated. Michele Bridle ensures the smooth operation of the SPATEX Show (along with Helen Mulingani). The Chairs of the Boards, Committees and Councils of the various companies ensure that the companies set the right direction of travel to meet the needs of the industry. Therefore I offer a huge thank you to them all and especially Tony Welsby (BSPF), Richard Carrington (SPATA), Issy Rickards Sanger (BISHTA); Jamie Adams (PIP) and Howard Gosling (SPATEX) for leading these companies. There are also many partners that help with the smooth running of the businesses and special thanks go to those that we work with most often and they are BOTTLE PR, Go Publishing, Talk2 PR and Wright Hassall Solicitors. Each of these companies plays their part with ongoing help and advice throughout the year.

With best wishes for this festive period and I look forward to catching up with friends old and new at SPATEX 2012. spn
