GAFFEY CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY – AND A NEW BUSINESS STRATEGY


Gaffey Technical Services, the East Lancashire family business known for its water treatment products has chosen its 25th anniversary year to make a strategic change.


The business, established in 1986, which has provided specialist chemical dosing equipment and services to local authority and commercial pools throughout the UK, has had success in the hands of founder


Mike Gaffey and more recently with his sons Phil and Andrew. “Now,” says Managing Director Phil, “is the time to be more in direct control of our business.”


The change will come with the business focusing more on design and manufacturing – looking for innovation, new products and improved water treatment products. “We have built up our reputation and a large customer base through

Gaffey’s range of instrumentation from chemical dosing systems, chlorine dosing equipment and a wide range of instrumental and control systems has meant it has developed a national network of trade partners for sales, service and installation. The changes to the business will see Gaffey limit its end user pool operation and focus on what the family see as a real need to introduce innovation in the pool market when it comes to disinfection products. “I think we are still struggling in the UK when it comes to water quality. Pool operators are looking for the best value products for a low price. We know this is an issue and it is important for manufacturers to get the right cost structure. “The local authority market is busy but many water treatment products can easily cost £20,000 or £30,000 but a two or three year payback for many authorities just isn’t attractive enough.


“We have to offer the best possible price because we know


local authorities are struggling. We try to put best practice into the products we offer and rather than just follow suit we have always tried to innovate and offer quality with products with a good service life.” The originals of Gaffey Technical Services were in founder Mike Gaffey’s work in local authority baths management which through a period servicing chemical dosing products opened up an opportunity to start his own business which attracted first Andrew as Sales Director and then Phil. “We’re very proud to have reached 25 years. The business has always been associated with quality and that’s what we will continue to build on. I’m sure we’ll think of some way to celebrate the anniversary. I’m just not sure how yet.”


Recently the company launched a new range of Hyprolyser electrochlorination systems for on- site production of sodium hypochlorite solution.


As one of the safest and most efficient electro-chlorination systems available, it can provide chlorine at a substantially lower cost than commercial chemicals, and additional savings in maintenance, health and safety and COSHH management. It’s the type of product Gaffey’s are keen to bring to the market in the future.

SWIMMING POOL INSULATION IMPRESSES AT HERTFORDSHIRE ‘GREEN AWARDS’


Thermapool, the swimming pool insulation company, earned itself a place in the finals of the Hertfordshire Green Awards, when it made a major impact on a Surrey school pool’s heating bills. The company made it to the finals in two categories in the Best Environmental Project of the Year and Green Innovation categories when its case study was measured alongside national projects. Nigel Rose, inventor of the insulation system, said after the award ceremony held at Knebworth House, he had chosen to enter the case of a school pool for the awards because of the scale of the saving in


energy consumption – and therefore carbon emissions.


Nigel researched and designed it originally in a bid to save energy costs for pool owners, with the added bonus of saving carbon emissions in the process. Thermapool prevents 86% heat loss from the swimming pool of any shape or size, and, in conjunction with a clear cover negates the need for heating the pool over the summer, substantially reducing energy bills the rest of the year. The Hertfordshire school pool measures 12 metres x 6 metres and is 1.2 metres deep. In 2009 when it was installed the school found their


heating bill reduced from the usual £5,000 down to £300 while the pool remained at a comfortable 29°C. “At that point the school was running the heating every night of the week on Economy 7. Since then there have been even more energy savings – this year they decided to try dropping the heating down to only two nights a week, and found the pool still stayed at 29°C. It’s anticipated the entire season’s heating bill will come to less than £150,” says Nigel.


Nigel’s research in developing enabled him to lobby the Government to change the building regulations relating to swimming


pool insulation – it is now law for all new indoor pools to be insulated on the floors and walls, which is making pools much more environment- friendly and cheaper to run. Thermapool offers energy saving grants to insulate domestic swimming pools.
