contrived (in the way certain chains take themselves too seriously), The Ace on 29th at Broadway can be described as improvi- sational. Cool but not self-centered, his- toric yet timeless, the property offers a day/night experience - At dawn the lobby goes from hipster coffee and a laptop vibe to a neon-lit stage, DJ'd setting by dusk.
It is the only hotel I've ever stayed where those of the younger set entering the lobby at nighttime are carded.
The lobby's furnishings go from vintage to custom-designed; a plush couch fronts a purposefully-graffiti filled stairway, hand- some wood paneling appears tre' Park Avenue - all business with an indie under- tone.
Our room is loft-like, almost a study in min- imalism with a touch of attitude. Picture a college dorm room if its occupants are Andy Warhol and Lou Reed. Very artsy and utterly industrial - each in a good way.
While the family is folding to their hearts content, I begin planning a gustatory tour of NYC. My goal: Locate the best thin crust pizza and the best burger in town - and maybe a few beers to wash it all down.
The former is instantly found later that day. On 6th Avenue at 26th Street we go to Waldy's, a tiny eatery with what is quite possibly the perfect thin crust pie. All of Rob Waldy's toppings are fresh; each pizza is lovingly tended to within the wood burning oven which lends just the right amount of char and crisp.
If Lombardi's (in Soho and circa-1905) is the best and oldest traditional pizzeria in the country (and it is), then Waldy's is its top-tasting new wave cousin. We're back there the next day for lunch, too.
We'll also sample a burger at a place called Brgr (287 7th Avenue). I give their grass-fed beauts a score of “7.5.” I've had better in Manhattan, and a lot worse.
Each time I visit the Fashion Institute, I realize how very conducive the venue is
