convention hotel room nights booked by the bureau were up 79,000 over the last fiscal year - reaching 745,909. Conventions and groups continued to be the leading consumer of hotel rooms in 2010, with 35 percent of the market mix, according to PKF Consulting.
Also in the report, the American Bus Association’s (ABA) convention brought 3,000 group tour specialists to the city in January for a three-day regional showcase. On average, according to the ABA, as a result of hosting this con- vention, a city can expect an increase of group tour business between 10-25 percent.
Additional news in the report includes the Philadelphia Sports Congress (PSC) announcement that it will host six NCAA Championships over a four-year period (2011-2014), and the bureau’s Multicultural Affairs Congress (MAC) collaborating with PSC in April on a Black Sports Familiarization Tour during the iconic Penn Relays, with $50 million in potential business touring Philadelphia.
In addition, the PCVB unveiled new mobile tools, including a mobile website (
explorephl.mobi), which allows for browsing deals at hotels, restaurants and attractions. It also provides a calen- dar of events. The bureau launched a Philadelphia Official Visitors Guide iPad
app and a Short Message System (SMS) program, too, that offers deals via text. In addition, MAC unveiled a Multicultural app and mobile site.
The PCVB is working with partners to develop Hospitality University, a training program for existing and the next gen- eration of frontline hospitality workers. The bureau also is a partner with the Philadelphia Academies, Inc. Hotel, Restaurant, Travel and Tourism career academy, and is working to create an industry pipeline that will connect stu- dents in Philadelphia public schools with careers in hospitality.
WHAT’S NEW
The newly expanded Pennsylvania Convention Center now features a vast new meeting space, including one mil- lion square feet of saleable space (528,000 square feet of contiguous exhibit space), a second 55,408-square foot ballroom and 79 meeting rooms, making it the 14th largest convention facility in the U.S.
The convention center is fully equipped with state-of-the-art technology, includ- ing WiFi connectivity, digital signage and smart rooms. Seamlessly woven into Philadelphia’s downtown, attendees at the convention center are just a quick stroll from more than 9,000 hotel rooms, plus dining and museums.
