Good for Austria
Damien Connelly talks to Dieter Turmer, Deputy General Manager, Casino Wien and Paul Vogel, Guest Relation Manager at Grand Casino Baden

here’s a lot going on at Casinos Austria. As the company’s Managing Board recently noted: “We…find ourselves in an exciting and challenging
2011. A year in which, in all likelihood, the licences for 5 casinos, one poker casino and the provision of slot machines in the federal states will be awarded. This procedure will be conducted as a transparent pan-European search for interested parties.” *
It’s exciting and challenging times for Casinos Austria, for the gambling industry in Austria, and for the gambling industry in Europe. Casinos Austria has a fight on its hands to both keep its 12 licences and win the right to operate the 3+1 new licences. What better time to take a look ‘behind the scenes’ at this, the fifth most valued brand in Austria?
Casino Wien Located in Austria’s capital city, Casino Wien is
housed in the Palais Esterhàzy, a building that dates back to the 16th
Century; and maybe even
earlier. On the ground floor is the informal Jackpot Casino that offers gaming from 11am and has no dress code for entry. On the first and second floors are the main casino areas, along with a separate poker room, and a range of F&B spaces; all open from 3pm. The casino currently offers 167 slots, 26 live tables, and a variety of multi-roulettes. As with
Damien Connelly and Dieter Turmer, Deputy General Manager, Casino Wien
all other Austrian ‘full licence’ casinos—and in common with most other European countries— entry to any gaming area of the casino is after registration requiring proof of identity, such as showing your passport or drivers licence. During my visit, you could make a once-per-day purchase of €30 worth of playing credit that would cost you €27, with this playing credit able to be gambled at any of the 12 casinos. I bought this €30 promotion and gambled it on a single spin of the roulette wheel during my visit the next evening to Grand Casino Baden—I was never good at roulette!
