CHARLESTOWN state member and vet Andrew Cornwell is to take the lead in a review of companion animals and policies in NSW. Mr Cornwell has been appointed chairman


of the state’s fi rst companion animal taskforce, a move which follows concern about the number of animals being put down. In the past fi ve years, more than 150,000 dogs and cats have been destroyed in pounds across the state.

Mr Cornwell said the taskforce was part of the government’s commitment to increasing both microchipping and desexing of cats and dogs, while also reducing the number of unwanted animals and death rates in NSW pounds. “The taskforce brings together leading animal welfare experts, members of the companion animal industry and local government representatives,” he said.


“As a trained veterinarian, with my experience in metropolitan and regional areas, I have a close understanding of animal welfare issues and am honoured with the responsibility bestowed upon me to lead this important taskforce.” Minister for Local Government Don Page, whose portfolio covers the Companion Animals Act, said the new taskforce would aim to reduce current rates of pet destruction and promote responsible pet ownership in NSW. “Recent statistics show that of the animals arriving at NSW pounds each year, about one third of dogs and nearly 70 per cent of cats are [put down].”


Mr Cornwell said the taskforce would promote the fact that pet ownership was a serious responsibility.
