DID YOU KNOW?The box
WE all watch it. The “box” dominates most of our lives. This week we’re not talking about invention, but more so some of the historic shows that have aired around the world.
THE GOOD
THE US media stalwart Meet the Press takes fi rst place in the longest-running program stakes. Television broadcast debut: November 6, 1947. Co-creators of Meet the Press: Martha Rountree and Lawrence Spivak. Expanded to an hour-long program: September 20, 1992. First guest: James A. Farley, former postmaster general of the United States. US presidents: Every US president since John F. Kennedy has appeared. World leaders: There have been more than 60 prime ministers, presidents, premiers, kings or chancellors representing 32 countries. Longest time span between fi rst and most recent appearance: Senator Ted Kennedy fi rst appeared on March 11, 1962 and his next appearance was on January 21, 2007, a time span of almost 45 years.
THE BAD There have been too many shows to mention that have appeared on the screen and disappeared just as quickly. Here are a few of the quickest departures around. Co-Ed Fever, 1979: A series that tried to capitalise on the success of the movie National Lampoon’s Animal House. Heather Thomas of the show The Fall Guy was the main star. Although six episodes were fi lmed, only one was broadcast. Dot Comedy, 2000: Dot Comedy was a series that found humour on the internet to entertain the audience. Why watch TV for entertainment that is already on the internet? That is what audiences thought and the series was cancelled after only one episode. Heil Honey, I’m Home, 1990: This British comedy showed a couple portraying Hitler and Eva Braun living next door to a Jewish couple. The amazing thing is that someone actually approved this plotline for production. The pilot was the only episode ever aired. Public Morals, 1996: This was a situation comedy based on a police detective squad. Many networks considered the show vulgar and

complained to American creators CBS. Turn- On, 1969: A sketch comedy series that was similar to the American hit Laugh-In. The show technically ran for only one episode, but several affi liate stations found the show so off ensive that they switched to another show after the fi rst commercial break. And the winner is … Australia’s Naughtiest Home Videos, 1992: The show wins the award for the shortest-lived TV series in history. Hosted by Doug Mulray, it showed funny home videos with a sexual content. During the fi rst episode, network owner Kerry Packer received phone calls complaining about the show’s content. He turned on the television and was so outraged that he called the station and told them to pull the show immediately. It ran for just 34 minutes.
THE GOOD AGAIN Coincidentally, it is again a media program that takes the gong for Australia’s longest-running television
program.Four Corners is Australia’s premier television current aff airs program and was fi rst broadcast in August 1961.
