MUMPRENEUR: Jane Day with children Dylan, Jessica and Lachlan.

JAYNE Day from Swish Lily has been selected as a finalist in the 2011 AusMumpreneur awards.

The awards presented by connect2mums celebrate and recognise mothers in business achieving outstanding success in areas such as business, product development, services and innovation in businesses from Australia and New Zealand.

The awards are designed to recognise the growing number of women who successfully balance motherhood and business in a way that suits their life and family.

Mrs Day said she had a background in real estate property management, but after starting a family, investigated other business ideas where she could contribute fi nancially and still be home with her children. “I wanted fl exibility in my working hours – in short, a work/family/life balance,” she said.

“Swish Lily was born in 2007 while pregnant with our third child. I started by selling on ebay and established a great customer base. “We then launched our own online boutique (selling products for babies, children and mothers) in 2008. “Swish Lily’s mission is to provide an exceptional online shopping experience for our customers.

“We want our customers to have online access to fabulous products at affordable prices, but most importantly, to make the whole experience enjoyable and easy.”

There are many benefits to balancing business and motherhood, according to Mrs Day.

“I can be a successful businesswoman but still have the fl exibility to choose what hours of the day I work so that I can be available for the kids’ activities or to be home with them when they are sick,” she said.

It can be challenging to be a successful business woman while raising a family, and Mrs Day gave this advice for other people thinking about starting their own enterprise. “Believe in yourself and in your business idea. Understand that being a ‘mumpreneur’ is extremely hard work and it isn’t as easy as it sounds.

“I certainly thought it was going to be easier. But it is also very rewarding and satisfying. Don’t give up when the going gets tough, as you only fail when you stop trying.” Winners will be selected by a public vote at connect2mums.com.au, with voting closing at midnight on Sunday, August 21. The winners of the 2011 AusMumpreneur awards will be announced on August 27.
