EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD Aleisha Kate Bailey from Maryland is set to inspire HSC textiles and design students when her major work goes on show as part of a special exhibition. The Texstyle exhibition at the Newcastle Craft and Sewing Show features a selection of the best major works from 2010 HSC textiles and design students, throughout NSW and ACT.
The works are notable for their innovative design and exquisite detail which showcases a variety of techniques, including beading, fabric sculpture, applique, embroidery, patchwork, ruching and lacing.
Miss Bailey’s garment,
entitled Cascading Rose (pictured), is a highly intricate and detailed form of haute couture apparel.
“I was inspired by creme roses, elegance and beauty in my design,” she said. “I wanted to create a look that was unique, classy and a classical garment, which is why I chose the colour scheme of creme and soft, pale greens with a hint of pink to enhance the elegance and softness.”
Her design used a variety of techniques, including free machine drawing, fabric manipulation, 3D applique, layering and embellishment.
Since graduating from Callaghan College Jesmond last year, Miss Bailey started studying

fitness and personal training, however, given her love of textiles and fashion, she has not discounted the idea of a career in that industry unfolding in the future. “Textiles for me is always fun; it is a pastime for me,” she said.
“I really enjoy being able to create unique pieces of work that can tell a story or represent a theme. Textiles has no limits, which is why I love it. You can make basically anything. I love being creative and fi nd it a great way to express myself.” The Texstyle exhibition will provide a font of inspiration and ideas for students working towards their HSC major works in the textile area. The textiles and design HSC subject focuses
on fi ve core areas, including apparel, furnishings, costume, textile arts and non-apparel and the Texstyle exhibition highlights the creativity and talent of its young designers. The exhibition refl ects the students’ high standards of achievement in design inspiration, visual design, manufacturing specifi cations, investigation, experimentation and evaluation and is set to be one of the highlights of the Newcastle Craft and Sewing Show.
