RETURNS BEFORE Andre Rieu, before Vanessa Mae, before Bond, Martin Lass had already broken the mould of the usual violin soloist with his 1989 crossover album Bach to the Future. His classical beginnings, which included
playing as principal and soloist with orchestras such as the Sydney Symphony and Australian Chamber Orchestra, led to the creation of a solo career that covered many genres of music. He presents modern interpretations of such greats as Beethoven and Vivaldi alongside the jazz of Brubeck and Ellington, the Gypsy music of Eastern Europe, the world’s great love songs, Broadway show tunes and his own original compositions.
Born in Chicago, Lass’s interest in the violin began at the age of eight, when he saw world famous violinist Yehudi Menuhin on television. Menuhin became Lass’s earliest idol. Furthermore, his father instilled in him an appreciation of all styles of music, from classical and jazz to country and pop. His family moved to Australia when he was 11, and by his early 20s he was already an accomplished classical musician. During that time, responding to a
brazen dare (the exact details of which will never be released), Lass appeared on a nationally televised talent show. He blitzed all opposition, winning everything and receiving standing ovations from the judges. From second fi ddle in an orchestra,
ONE of Australia’s best-loved and most- awarded country music performers Kasey Chambers is heading back out on the road to promote her latest album Little Bird. Released late last year, the album
debuted on the national album charts at number three and won four Golden Guitars at the 2011 Tamworth Country Music Awards.
Chambers will be joined on the road by special guests, the legendary Bill Chambers and Tamworth’s fi rst lady of fi ddle Ashleigh Dallas. Catch Kasey Chambers at the Cessnock
Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, August 20.
Lass quickly became one of Australia’s most sought-after popular entertainers. He has released 10 major-selling CD recordings, toured Australia with his band, and performed alongside many distinguished international names in concert. Martin
Lass performs at Cardiff Panthers on Friday, August 19. Doors open at 1pm and admission is free. Every ticket receives a voucher for two bain marie meals for $14 for lunch at the Cardiff Panthers bistro on the day of the performance.

Living a teenage dream
ONE of the hottest shows for 2011 is coming to Swansea RSL Club. Betty Dargie stars in the power-packed
production which pays tribute to pop sensation Katy Perry and features the Oz Pussycat Dolls. Dargie’s natural resemblance to Perry is
uncanny. After being mistaken for Perry by strangers on the street for more than 12 months, the idea for this show was born. No expense has been spared in production,
as this show features exact replicas of some of Perry’s most famous and outrageous costumes, including the fruit dress and the cupcake bra. Dargie’s powerful and dynamic vocal skills create a realistic tribute with songs like I Kissed a Girl, Teenage Dream, Firework, California Girls and many more. The Katy Perry Show is accompanied by stunning female and male dancers to complete the experience. This exciting show also includes a tribute
to the Pussycat Dolls. Five of the country’s most beautiful and talented dancers and vocalists come together to create a special tribute to the girl supergroup. Exciting choreography, stunning costumes and songs such as When I Grow Up, Don’t Cha, Buttons and Jai Ho will leave you screaming for more. Don’t miss out on this year’s hottest show at Swansea RSL Club on Saturday, August 20.
