that’s ENTERTAINMENT Rediscovering short ‘n’SWEET himself
STILL standing
STRONG
HAVING left the band behind and taken off on a global adventure alone, Mat McHugh is not so much reinventing himself as he is rediscovering. It began with a theatre tour across
the States and into Canada with fellow troubadour John Butler. It was during that trip McHugh
reconnected with the essence of being a muso – just one man and his music on the road; the only concern, fi nding the next stage on which to play. On his return, McHugh headed into the studio and created the Go Don’t Stop solo EP. He then stuff ed that in his bag, too, and jumped on the next plane to South America, landing in one of his favourite countries outside of home, Brazil. In celebration of this new turn at the
crossroads, he has also launched The Blacktop Diaries, a continuing series of musings about travel, self, art, Hemingway, global responsibility and all inbetween. The fi rst instalment set in Rio De Janeiro is ready to transport you now. Go to his website at
matmchughmusic.com and check it out. And you, too, can be part of the
adventure. Join him live and intimate, as he strips back songs spanning 10 years – from the classic Morning Sun days through to his latest solo treasures on the Aussie leg of the Go Don’t Stop tour. He will be playing at Lizotte’s Newcastle
on Friday, August 19. short ‘n’SWEET
High energy EXPLOSION
SUNDAYS Record is a high-energy, three- piece pop/rock band. Their explosive stage presence, catchy melodies and spine-tingling harmonies have received a great deal of praise from crowds and journalists. The band members’ varied individual
infl uences are well represented in their live cover sets, ranging from John Butler Trio to Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson to the Living End and the Romantics to the Beatles. Sundays Record has been performing
together for fi ve years, and during that period, have achieved many accolades in the musical community. Led by singer and guitarist David
Gretton, backed by bassist Ben Travis and drummer Ben Chidgey, they have formed a strong musical understanding and uniqueness in their sound. Using techniques such as vocal harmonising and multimelodic layering, Sundays Record create an edge in their music that is not found in other bands. They will be playing at the Mary Ellen Hotel on Friday, August 19.
AUSTRALIAN songwriter Wendy Matthews has a reputation as an artist par excellence with a sublime voice that never fails to move people who hear it. Now, Novocastrians will once again get the
chance to hear this amazing talent when she performs in August. Her Standing Strong tour will include all
her hits along with some rarely performed classics not often heard on radio. Joining on her on stage will be guest appearances from musicians she has travelled the pop highway with over the years. Both acoustically and physically, Matthews
moves with an enviable minimalism. Her music is an unhurried journey of clean melodies, infectious energy and simple grace. In an age where cynicism is an attribute, Matthews has proven that commitment to beauty is still not only valid, but applauded by the public ear. This is exemplifi ed by the fact that her
music is now in more than one million homes in Australia.
She has an immense talent and capacity to
capture and defi ne a diverse rage of styles in her music. She takes songs from every genre and makes them her own – from jazz to blues, rock to gospel and from soul to infectious pop, Wendy Matthews can do it all. After a successful career as an in-demand
back-up singer, Matthews fi rst sprang to public attention fronting the band Absent Friends and their I Don’t Wanna be with Nobody But You. After Absent Friends, Matthews further
cemented herself in the Aussie music pantheon with her debut solo album Émigré, which spawned the hits Token Angels, Let’s Kiss and The Woman’s Gotta Have It. In the ensuing years, Matthews’s star
has continued to burn even brighter with a constant string of hits and platinum albums. There are very few artists in Australia that
can cite credentials as impressive as Matthews – seven ARIAS, more than 22 singles, seven top- selling albums and, most of all, the love from her fans. Catch Wendy Matthews when she
performs at Lizotte’s Newcastle on Sunday, August 21.
