Sailing experiences opened up for all
By MICHAEL BLAXLAND
IN September last year, a special sailing day was held in Newcastle for people with disabilities. A vessel was brought from
Sydney to give young and old participants a chance to experience the thrill of the harbour and the feeling of sea spray in their hair. The event was such a success that Newcastle woman Carole Powell and a group of likeminded people became determined to establish their own charity in Newcastle. Months of work resulted in the launch last Friday of Newcastle Special Needs Sailing by NSW Government Marie Bashir.
Mrs Powell said the charity was created for children and adults with special needs, and

their families and carers, to experience the joy of sailing.
Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club is providing mooring and support and an appeal is now on to raise $200,000 to buy a special boat that can accommodate four wheelchairs and 14 guests.
Mrs Powell said her committee was determined to have the sailing experience up and running by Christmas.
“When the Sailors with Disabilities came here last year it was great, but rather than it being a visit once in a blue moon, we wanted to be able to give people with special needs a regular chance to sail,” she said. “We plan to run weekly sailing days, monthly events to involve siblings, nautical workshops and family fun days on the harbour.”
Professor Bashir praised the leadership of Newcastle Special Needs Sailing for “offering the opportunity of sailing for fun and for personal growth to people with special needs”. “The inclusion of family and carers will strengthen their family enjoyment,” she said.
