that’s ENTERTAINMENT John Langley

When did your artistic passion begin? During my childhood, creating cartoon characters was my fi rst passion, born from a love of Tintin and Asterix comics. My artistic inclinations then lay dormant for many years until six years ago when I started life drawing classes with local artist Peter Lankas. Initially, it was a way of getting out again at night after a few years of the socialising-free zone that can come with raising young children. However, it didn’t take long before I was devouring art books and realising that painting and drawing would provide some of the great sparks of life. Describe your work. The majority of my current work is human life studies in gouache, with the colour of the preprepared acrylic backgrounds often providing inspiration for the overall colouring of the piece. The main thrust of these works is to complement the development of my oil painting skills. What inspires you? I’m driven by the human form and human relationships in conjunction with the rhythm that dance and music play upon the human spirit. What has been your greatest achievement? Developing my painting from life to the extent that I’m currently hanging some of these works in my fi rst group exhibition. What would be your advice for budding artists? Since I’m only exhibiting for the fi rst time, it would be presumptive of me to off er much advice to the budding artist, except to say that no matter what style your art entails, regularly drawing or painting the human body from life can only improve and add zest to your work. John Langley’s work will be featured as part of the Drawn Upstairs exhibition at Newcastle Art Space until Sunday, August 28.
