CHANGING: Mangroves in Fishery Creek. Photo: CMA. By MICHAEL BLAXLAND
THE last phase of the massive transformation of the Hexham swamp into a living wetland is underway.
The teeming mangrove and salt marsh communities were changed into a reed-choked freshwater system when floodgates were installed at the mouth of Iron Bark Creek in the early 1970s.
Over the past three years, though, the Hunter Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA) has been reopening the fl oodgates and 308 hectares out of a total area of 700 hectares has so far been recovered. The restoration of the remaining area is being planned, to the CMA submitting an application with the NSW Department of Planning and Infrastructure for stage three of the project. A CMA spokeswoman said the environmental performance assessment report for stage two had also been submitted, along with an environmental monitoring program. “The proposal for stage three is a continuation of the project, and aims to see a total of approximately 700 hectares restored to estuarine wetland habitat by increasing the
exchange of tidal waters through fl oodgates on Ironbark Creek,” she said.
“Estuarine wetlands are composed of a mosaic of habitats, including mangroves, saltmarsh, open water and reeds.” Extensive monitoring will continue throughout stage three to record changes in the ecology of the project area, including water levels, water quality, vegetation changes, water birds, fi sh, prawns and mosquitoes. “As the wetland rehabilitates to its former
glory, we expect to see an increase in numbers of migratory waders and waterbirds, fi sh and prawns,” the spokeswoman said. In early 2011, just two years after opening
the fi rst fl oodgate, prawners reported substantial catches of king prawns in the Hunter estuary, some claiming it as their best catch in 40 years.
Hexham swamp is an internationally recognised wetland of about 2000 hectares and Ironbark Creek and its main tributaries Shelley Creek and Fishery Creek are part of the Ironbark Creek catchment which covers about 12,500 hectares of land, including urban, rural, forests and wetlands.
The Hexham swamp rehabilitation project will be showcased at the 14th International River Symposium in Brisbane in September.
Hi, I’m Adrian Corbould, Senior Lawyer at Turnbull Hill Lawyers, and I specialise in Disputed Wills. My many years of experience show that many Wills are not legally binding and can be successfully challenged if they are unfair or have left people out unreasonably… and I have become an expert in helping people get what they’re fairly entitled to.
Spouses, children and defacto partners of the deceased may be eligible to claim… and so may others in certain circumstances.
You have a limited time from the date of death to lodge a claim so it’s always best to act quickly to get professional guidance on what your entitlements are.
People will be delighted to know that often the legal fees of challenging a Will are paid out of the estate of the person who has passed away ... there are some simple conditions which I can explain.
There have been many changes in the law over recent years leaving many questions to be answered...
