FOOTBALL: Solo Cup Well done to South Cardiff

for winning the Solo Cup last week, 4-3 on penalties over Edgeworth at Ulinga Park. All the talk seems to be about the incident involving Eagles keeper Ben Smith, who was red-carded after sticking his middle fi nger up at some fanatical South Cardiff fans behind the goals as the shoot-out was in progress. At the time, Edgeworth were leading on penalties until the marching orders were given. Eagles offi cials aren’t happy because they think the penalties should have been played down the other end of the fi eld where no fans can get to. Northern Football CEO David Elland is right by saying it would have been disrespectful to the fans if that had occurred. I didn’t see any fan jump the fence and physically harm anyone, so maybe Smith should’ve just concentrated on the job at hand. The sad thing about it all is that this little bit of controversy has been the only interesting story of an otherwise less than memorable Solo Cup for yet another season. Time to scrap, it boys.

Les he forgot

I caught up with SBS football guru Les Murray last week when he came to Newcastle. A gentleman in every sense of the word, Murray has stood the test of time to still be considered by many as the “Mr Football” of this country. But his reputation has come under scrutiny after a back fl ip on the allegations he made in his book The World Game where he claimed Socceroo captain Lucas Neill had led a player mutiny against former Socceroo coach Pim Verbeek during last year’s World Cup. “I was misled by bad sources and forgot to check if they were credible,” he said. It wasn’t until Neill threatened Murray with legal proceedings the apology came and publisher Hardie Grant confi rmed all material referring to Neill would be removed from all reprints of the book. Let’s say Murray be checking and double checking in future

DYNAMIC DUO: Valentine Public School year 6 students Jordan Pryke (left) and Reece Londsdale have certainly been doing their school proud in the sporting arena. The boys, both prodigious shot putters who have represented their school at the state level and this year, through the Eastlakes Zone, have made it through to the regionals. If that wasn’t enough, the boys have also been selected to show off their rugby union prowess in the NSW Primary Schools 11 years rugby union carnival in Parkes this week. Good luck and good on you, boys.

books he decides to pen. Many people don’t know this, but Murray is a shrewd player in the property market and was part of a syndicate involved with the proposed purchase of the old Newcastle post offi ce in Hunter Street a few years back. “It would have been a nice wine bar. There was so much red tape involved at the time, we just walked away.”

ACADEMY DINNER Just a reminder that the Hunter Academy of Sport’s presentation night will

be held on September 5 at the University of Newcastle Great Hall, starting at 7pm. The academy has been an institution for many athletes over the years and probably doesn’t get the recognition it deserves at times. Every member of its 27 diff erent sporting squads will receive a certifi cate of participation, while one member from each will receive a University of Newcastle scholarship. Not bad, eh?
