Only £99... Now CADCAM software really is accessible to all sign-makers

PRODUCT News

For over 15 years, Delcam, an internationally recognised developer of Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CADCAM) software, has been providing sign-makers worldwide with its range of software solutions to create 2D and 3D signs. Having worked closely with industry professionals throughout this time, Delcam is aware of the costs involved for smaller companies or those considering entering the industry. To make this easier, Delcam has now launched its entry-level

CADCAM package, ArtCAM Express 2011, for only £99. This solution provides an ideal introduction into the world of CADCAM and offers basic drawing, as well as 2D and 3D machining functions. Additionally, sign-makers can also tailor their software by purchasing additional modules to suit specific design and manufacturing requirements. Harnessing recent developments from its sibling products, ArtCAM

Express is also available in both 32 and 64 bit versions. This means that sign-makers using 64-bit Windows can increase the speed at which they work, as well as work with larger, more memory intensive files. Grant Bailey from Artifacturing comments: “Calculations appear much faster and it loaded a 250mb file in three seconds!” With complete freedom to work from their own saved customised

interface layout, extremely useful when computer sharing, users can begin creating their design solely in ArtCAM or by importing pre-created 2D artwork or 3D files directly. Text can then quickly be added to the design by accessing ArtCAM’s sizeable ‘Font Library’. This text and any other vector artwork can then be used for any inlaid sign using ArtCAM Express’s intuitive ‘Inlay Wizard’. This makes precise male and female parts with a perfectly flat surface, great at stopping unsightly shadows from illuminated signs appearing.

To help visualise the design it can be rendered in a number of

materials such as the popular wood varieties as well as showing the wood grain direction. If the sign requires outside approval, this can then be sent as a rotatable 3D PDF. Once authorised, the sign-maker can then select the tools they

want to use for machining from a database of over 250 routers and machine tools as well as benefit from a number of machining strategies to ensure that the piece is machined as accurately and efficiently as possible. Furthermore, if the user has a large production run, the Nesting module can place all the pieces to be cut according to their true shape preventing any material wastage.

If the user however is looking to create dimensional signage, ArtCAM Express also provides a library of over 400 pieces of relief clipart. Sign-makers can also choose from a number of modules to

further aid the design process, such as the ArtCAM Express Vector Tools module. This allows vector designs to be created on several layers that can be shown or hidden to easily manipulate parts of a design. This module also includes further functionality to edit and create vectors suitable for machining. There is also the Font Creator module which allows the user to

create or alter any font and then store it in ArtCAM Font Library, ideal for logos, for example, that designers may use when creating multiple pieces for a customer. Hand-carving effects or unique textures can also be added in a matter of minutes with ArtCAM’s Texture Toolpath module.

Finally, a simulation can be run of the pieces being machined

using the chosen tools and the given material block dimensions. This has proven extremely beneficial to customers because they can change the tools or machining strategies prior to machining, saving them time and money.
