Hello again from the Rotary Club of Great Harwood and Rishton. Japanese Earthquake and Tsunami Because of the public response to our collection outside Morrison's Store following the disaster, which raised £520, two Shelter Boxes were immediately despatched to the stricken area. Thank you to Morrison's Supermarket, for your co-operation. Especially to you all for showing once more your compassion and generosity. Focus on the Crocus The final event of this project was our ‘Hocus Pocus’ fund raising dinner at the Sparth House Hotel, when, after a fine meal, we were mesmerised by close-up magic at our tables by members of The Modern Mystic League. Thanks to the support of our sponsors, Metflex Precision Mouldings, Sarah Rhodes and ‘Get Ahead Hats’, Haworth and Nuttall Solicitors and Howarth Accountants of Accrington, together with all those who gave so generously on the night. We raised a magnificent £1,000+ for Rotary’s campaign to eradicate polio across the world. The crocus have bloomed and died, but will flower again over the years, thanks to all those who helped us ‘Focus on the Crocus.’ The Young Writer Competition. This annual competition is aimed at encouraging younger children to write creatively and this year entrants were asked to write a letter of their choice. The Club received over 100 entries from primary and secondary school pupils in the area. The winners in each age group received prizes and went forward to a Lancashire and Cumbria District final. Although not an overall winner, the following letter by a Norden pupil caused much amusement when it was read last month to a large assembly of Club representatives at a District meeting: ‘Dear Bill and Ben the flowertop fish I'm writing this letter to say I'm sorry for forgetting to feed

you and killing you, but I was only young and you do forget these things. I hope you enjoyed your couple of months living and now I hope you like swimming around in fish heaven where you can get all the fish flakes you can eat. If I had known that my dad was going to flush you down the toilet, I would have stopped him. It must have been a scary experience being dropped into the toilet, bobbing around for a while and then the water starting to swirl and you disappearing into the dark pipes. It was very upsetting when you passed away & I thought that you were buried in my garden. When I was told that you had been flushed down the toilet (6 years later) I was angry with my dad & he was very sorry. Yours sincerely P.S. If you see chips and peas, swim faster because you're not

in heaven you're in a fish and chips shop & you're likely to be battered.’

The Rotary Club meets each Tuesday evening at the Sparth House Hotel, Whalley Road, Clayton-le-Moors contact Secretary Graham Charnley on 01254 235142 or e-mail rotaryinghr@aol.com

There once was a fly on a wall

I wonder why didn't it fall Because its feet stuck Or was it just luck

Or does gravity miss things so small?

For a long time it seemed to me that life was about to begin-Real Life. But there was always some obstacle in the way, something to be got through first, some unfinished business, time still to be served, a debt to be paid-then life would begin. At last it dawned on me that these obstacles were my life. Alfred D’Souza.
