CAG was set up in 2003 to provide a platform for the many voluntary groups in Great Harwood so that information could be shared and the Groups could be active by working closely with the Area Council in ensuring that the character of the town is conserved and enhanced. CAG meets in Bank Mill House on the third Thursday of every month at 7.00pm. All Great Harwood voluntary groups and residents are welcome to attend. Opportunities for local Voluntary Groups Three opportunities have arisen for Great Harwood’s voluntary, faith and community groups to promote themselves and make more people aware of the outstanding work that is going on everyday in the locality: 1. Agricultural Show - Groups are invited to have a stall in the Community Marquee on Springbank Holiday Monday, May 30th, where they will be able to display examples of their activities, recruit helpers and answer questions from the many visitors which the Great Harwood Show always attracts. 2. Website - The Great Harwood Regeneration Board is in the process of setting up a website for Great Harwood in which it is hoped that the town’s voluntary groups, as well as its businesses, will be able to promote themselves and inform people of the many events and activities that take place locally. 3. Armed Forces Day - Groups are encouraged to take part in Hyndburn Borough’s parade of thanks on Saturday, June 25th. It is an honour to hold this event in Great Harwood as it is usually held in Accrington and groups are asked to consider swelling the already substantial numbers that will be participating in this parade which is being organised by the Borough council with the help of the local branches of the Royal British Legion. Any group interested in any of the above should contact the (CAG) Secretary Peter Holden telephone 01254 883517 or email peter.holden3@tesco.net All groups (and individual residents) are welcome to attend CAG meetings at Bank Mill House on Church St every third Thursday evening in the month at 7.00pm where reports are received from the Young People’s Service, the Regeneration Board, the local Police and the various voluntary groups. Hyndburn Borough Councillors and the Lancashire County Councillor are regular attenders to keep residents informed of the latest situation. The Great Harwood Civic Society’s Boundary Walk The annual Great Harwood Boundary Walk will take place this year on June 4th. The walk commemorates the original boundary checks carried out by the boys of the parish and local officials which was known as “Beating the Bounds”. There will be two groups on the day – one for practised walkers who want to cover the approximate 10 mile route in record time, the other for those who prefer a more leisurely pace and like to take in the magnificent vistas that are scattered along the town’s boundary. The walk will begin close to the old Lidgett pub at 9.30am on the day. Everyone is invited and encouraged to take part in this traditional Great Harwood event. For further details contact the Chairman, Steve Aspin, on 01254 889328.
