The local bowling season got underway on the 2nd April with the Mayors a n n u a l c h a r i t y b o w l i n g competition at Immanuel Bowling Club. 32 local bowlers took part on what was a cold but sunny day. The competition saw some tight games and the standard was high even though it was so early in the season. The eventual winner was Steve Anderton of Oakhill Park Bowling Club who was presented with the trophy by the Mayor. Mr David Waterhouse, Chairman of the Hyndburn & District Bowling League presented the Mayor with a cheque for £200 which had been raised on the day. Another competition was held at Rushton Street Bowling Club in Great Harwood the following week and again we were blessed with warm sunshine. Chris Cornall of Mercer Park Bowling Club was the winner of this one. The League season, sponsored by Greyhound Ford, got underway on the 11th April with all four divisions playing. In Division 1, there were wins for Waddington A, Ribblesdale A, Sabden B & Rushton St E who had a convincing win against the Coppice. In Division 2 Grange A led the way with a win against Rushton St C whilst there was a tight finish in the Division 3 match between Oakhill Ash & Globe C which saw the Globe team taking the win by just one point. In Division 4 Oakhill Park B had a good victory against Grange C.
