Margaret Trudeau! Acheson’s of Orangeville Fashion! Kids and Horses Foundation Event!

By Lauren Sullivan Oh, what a night! The wine was pouring and delectable gour- mandises by Gourmandissimo were at one’s fingertips being served as the Kids and Horses Foundation kicked off their MAR- GARET TRUDEAU EVENT! Standing on a make-shift modeling runway set in Orangeville’s Best Western Hotel, Dini Petty, as M.C., initiated the evening with the Fashion Show by Acheson’s. Ms. Petty summarily suggested that Orangeville has never been the same since Dianne Acheson arrived.

cascaded down the staircase and rose to the occasion on the elevat- ed platform running through the crowd of approximately three hun- dred in attendance. One by one, beautiful women of all ages strut- ted the togs and toggle of design-

To follow, we were all given a rare gift, a magnum opus in opportunity with the presence of the grand guest speaker in the ball- room, Margaret Trudeau. She needed no introduction with her larger-than- life Canadian persona as our first lady, wife of former Prime Min- ister, Pierre Trudeau. Her new autobiograph- ical memoir, Changing My Mind, comprised her main topic shared, allowing the audience into her personal strug- gle of sixty-five years with bi-polar, manic depression illness. She candidly acknowl- edged that for fifty of those years she was undiagnosed. In her own endearing style and sense of humour, and in reference to her book launching and fundraising for the special cause of this event, she introduced

herself at the start by adding, “I haven’t done horses yet.”

theme amidst elegance. One very large dog-in-tow, or towing in this case, was a nice surprise and show-stealer. This Italian Mastiff (Cane Corso luggage?) was nearly the size of a Shetland pony, and accompanied his mistress model, walking his line on leash. Bridle and reins might have been more appropriate, as he almost looked mountable, and with a name like Enzo, ready for a fast ride. He was the perfect accessory!

dent), Diana Janosik-Wronski, Alice Belonje, Elaine Woodward, Gina O’Sullivan and Dianne Acheson. For all their effort, tick- ets for this Blue Ribbon evening were sold out faster than a horse leaves the gates. I know personal- ly, as if performing a piaffe, I was late to leave the paddocks and trot in real motion to purchase mine. I had to whine and whinny louder to post for my entry, rearing to talk to the girls above for one last chance at attending. Luck Be a Lady Tonight!

The Foundation’s next big fundraising event will consist of a Barn Sale on May 28th which will feature vintage items and antiques, riding and other sports gear, great stuff for house and garden, jew- ellery and more.Be there! And early!…. And Oh, what a day that will be!

Margaret Trudeau was capti- vating with her ebullient, unending smile and equally constant flow of her fascinating life stories, well delivered with rident wit, and cou- pled with her down-to-earth humanity. She is currently cross- ing the country to share her poignant and candid memoir in order to raise awareness of mental health issues and raise funds for other charities. She kindly donated the proceeds from the evening’s sale of her novel to the Kids and Horses Foundation, patiently per- sonally signing every copy in grand finally. It was a most gener- ous gesture, bringing the very pur- pose of the evening to heart for the charity of helping children. The Kids and Horses Foun- dation provides horse-riding opportunities for kids whose fami- lies cannot otherwise afford that wonderful platform of learning. They believe that from the connec- tion of horse and child, there is a greater purpose. Through experi- ence in their programs, children gain in many ways, furlongs in and out of the arena, be it from the learning of a new skill to the changing of attitude by the build- ing of trust, patience, leadership and self-confidence.
