Rawhide Adventures-Cowboy Fun
I finally fulfilled a lifetime wish to be a cowgirl and take part in a cattle drive. This happened last August when I went with a couple of girlfriends-Kelly and Bente- for an overnight stay at Rawhide Adventures which operates as a working cattle ranch and also offers a variety of horseback riding experiences. Rawhide Adventures is owned by Carl “Crusty” Cosack and his charming wife Natalie “NJ”. The Peace Valley Ranch is situated north-east of Shelburne in the beautiful and scenic Mulmur Hills. Our adventure start- ed with Crusty selecting suitable horses for each of us and saddling up our mounts. We were given some basic instruction in the do’s and don’ts of herding cattle. Rule number one-don’t get too close to the bulls. During the next four and a half hours we moved two separate herds of black angus cattle to different pastures on the 1,000+ acres of land that the ranch owns.
handle of “Red” which matched her hair colour. Amy originates from Scotland and is studying at university and has worked at the ranch for several years. Amy/Red knows a lot about horses and cattle and was great com- pany on our adventure. Also accompanying us on the ride were some young wranglers-Josh from Kingston, Erin from North Carolina and Katie from Barrie- all staying at the ranch as a summer camping experience. Once we had moved all the cattle to their new pas- tures we then rode on to our campsite which was situat- ed on top of the Niagara Escarpment with a magnificent view where we could see all the way to Barrie. Our guide/trail boss was Amy with the wrangler
camped out on the porch of an old cabin and settled the horses who were allowed to graze freely and then spent the night in a small coral. Amy prepared a delicious roast beef dinner with roast pota- toes cooked over the camp fire. We watched the sun go down and trad- ed stories and then looked up to stargaze at the magnificent night sky.
Rawhide Adventures offers a variety of horse back riding experi- ences for youth and adults includ- ing lessons. They run a summer camp for budding wranglers and an
adult summer camp. Very comfort- able accommodation is available at the ranch including delicious home cooked meals. The ranch is open year round except for the month of November and over Christmas. They also have for sale good old fashioned beef raised in the natural way. More information is available on the ranch website at:
www.rawhide-adventures.on.ca. I hope these pictures will help the readers share our experience.
