34/ DECEMBER 2010 THE RIDER Margie Gayford Crowned Talent Squad Champion at Royal Horse Show
Toronto, Ontario — Margie Gayford of Sharon, ON, won the Jump Canada Talent Squad Final on Sat- urday, November 6, at Toronto’s Royal Horse Show.
Held over two days, the Talent Squad Final competition opened on November 5 with the $8,000 Alfred Rogers National Talent Squad Series Championship, Phase I, where Gayford and Winston, Wingberry Farm’s 11-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, won the opening speed competi- tion.
Gayford and Winston returned to the Ricoh Coli- seum the following day to
win the $10,000 Alfred Rogers National Talent Squad Series Champi- onship, Phase II, with the fastest double clear in a jump-off time of 37.11 sec- onds. As a result of her victories in both classes, Gayford was named National Talent Squad Final Champion. Gayford was also the winner of the 2010 Jump Canada Talent Squad Eastern Division with Winston.
“I am very pleased with Winston. He knows his job and he is all busi- ness in the ring. Anthony D’Ambrosio was the course designer last year as well, so we practiced his style of courses at home
this year to prepare,” said Gayford, who is coached by her father at home—leg- endary Canadian Olympian Tommy Gayford and by Mark Hayes of Kestrel Farms in competition. Winner of the 2009 Talent Squad Final, Margot Lefebvre of Stittsville, ON, and Mister Cash van der Veldmolen, her 14-year- old Belgian Warmblood gelding, claimed the Reserve Champion title. The pair finished in fourth place the first day and was second, behind Gayford, in Phase II during the two day competition.
“It was hard to match last year’s performance but reserve champion was as
pretty close as you could get. We have really improved over our performance from last year. Mister Cash van der Veldmolen is the most special horse. He is a dream to ride,” said Lefebvre.
The Jump Canada Talent Squad Series is a means of recognizing up-and-coming riders who are preparing to enter the grand prix ranks and gives them a platform to demonstrate their ability to become future members of the Canadian Equestrian Team.

Toronto, Ontario—Yann Can- dele of Caledon, ON, claimed the 2010 Canadian Show Jump- ing Championship on November 6 at The Royal Horse Show in Toronto, ON. The Canadian Show Jump- ing Championship, presented by Greenhawk, opened The Royal Horse Show on Friday evening with a $25,000 speed phase, and riders carried their scores for- ward to Saturday’s two-round final. After a faultless perfor- mance on Friday night with his 2010 World Equestrian Games partner, Pitareusa, Candele sat atop the leader board coming into Saturday’s final. There, Candele and Pitareusa, a 13- year-old Dutch Warmblood mare owned by Susan Grange, were the only horse-rider combination to post three clear rounds. Can- dele won the Canadian Show Jump- ing Championship title with a perfect score of zero faults.

“We tried really hard and it was a very difficult championship to win. Sometimes it goes your way or it
“Costa Rica Z is a quirky mare and that is why I love her and I think that is why she is so good. Indoor competition with Costa Rica Z is a little trickier for a big horse like her, but we have been coming to the Royal for a number of years,” said Millar.
Third place went to Sarah John- stone of Orangeville, ON and North Ridge’s Starlet, an 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood mare with a final score of five faults.
Amy Millar of Perth, ON, and her long-time partner, Costa Rica Z, a 15-year-old Holsteiner mare owned by Matthews and Millar Brooke Farm, finished as Reserve Canadian Champion. The pair was sitting in ninth spot with a score of four follow- ing Friday’s opening round, but returned to the Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday night and had two perfect rounds to finish on their Friday night score.
does not, and we had no room for error. We had to be clear, so I am very, very pleased with the performance of the mare and to be the Canadian Champion,” said Candele, who previously represented France in interna- tional competition before receiving his Canadian citizen- ship in 2008. “We are going into the international week of competition at the Royal with a little bit of extra confidence, so hopefully we can perform our best.”
Jill Henselwood of Oxford Mills, ON, and her 2008 Olympic team silver medal partner Special Ed, a 16-year-old Oldenburg gelding owned by Juniper Farms, finished in fourth spot with a score of six, while the 2008 champions, Keean White of Rockwood, ON, and the 10-year-old Holsteiner mare Celena Z, owned by Ashland Group and Angelstone Farms, took fifth place.
