16/ DECEMBER 2010 THE RIDER 3rd Annual Al’s Ride By Glen Morehouse.

Absolutely gorgeous weather greeted the more than 80 riders partici- pating in the 2010 version of the annu- al Al Humphrey Memorial Ride. This big horse-world event, usually staged on the August 1st long weekend, mean- ders through the lovely York Regional forest, thousands of acres of tall pines and good sand trails. A 25-kilometer course, taking 3 to 4 hours to complete, the Ride provides an opportunity for the horse-riding community to make a positive contribution to the lives of others by raising funds for deserving, non-profit organizations.

The Forest, as its known locally, offers some of the best trail riding in the province. With dense stands of tall pines, sand trails winding over hills and through broad valleys, the experi- ence is scenic and safe, a great way to spend a day on a horse. Breakfast and a hot lunch, included in the price of admission, completed a memorable event for riders.

This particular ride is held to hon- our the memory of the man who started our tradition of fundraising rides for charity. Al Humphrey was generous to a fault, loved being with people, and is fondly remembered by all who knew him. Al operated Al’s Tack Shop near Stouffville, until his death from cancer in 2006.

Each year the Memorial Ride con- tributes to deserving charities that direct their proceeds to cancer patients, or to cancer research. The 2010 Ride earned $18,000.00, to be divided equally between the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation - Stem Cell Research Fund, and, once again, the Make-A-Wish Foundation for children. Nothing is deducted for expenses; everything required to run the ride is donated and all necessary work is gen- erously provided by our tireless volun- teers. If you know any volunteers, thank them for the wonderful things they do.
