Equi Cup Horse Show Series Hosts A Star Packed Oktoberfest Jumper Show
Newmarket, Ontario – The final event in the 2010 Equi Cup Series took place during the Oktoberfest show on October 3rd, 2010 at the RCRA complex in Newmarket Ontario. The indoor show was a great opportunity for horses and
riders to put themselves to the test and see how they fair against world•renowned German course designer Werner Deeg, at a high caliber facility with top quality jump material. With affordable entry fees and great prize money, this show pro- vided everyone the opportunity to take part in an excellent end of the season event.
“It is great to see the series evolve to this point”, says Dieter Werner series founder. A notable highlight of the show was incorporating the practical component of the October 1st to 3rd Course Design Clinic, lead by Werner Deeg. On the clinic’s final day, participants were able to implement classroom training and had hands on experience setting courses during the show for the Training Jumper division. Midnight’s Summers Dream ridden by Kevin Holowack was the divi- sion champion and Ushi ridden by Carole Minhin- nick took home the reserve championship. For the remaining three classes, FEI Course Designer General Werner Deeg, who has designed courses at major venues worldwide including Spruce Meadows and Aachen, took the reins. The Junior/Adult Jumper Division saw Valerie ridden by Sid Acker as champion and Then Again ridden by Sam Douglas as the reserve.
Fleur ridden by Robert Krcmar were also clear in the speedy jump off and placed 3rd and 4th respectively. Marlboro ridden by Rob Donaldson rounded up the top 5. Top•notch horse rider combinations from all over the province were represented in the $5000 Grand Prix. The competitors had to weave and strategize around a technical Deeg course. Con- gratulations to Callaway 4 ridden by Michelle Vandal who produced a double clear with the fastest jump off time to win the class. Rob Don- aldson was also clear in the jump off but with a slightly slower time placing second riding Ruby Tuesday. Vandel also produced a double clear with VDL Viper H and had one time fault with Eko to grab the 3rd and 4th placings. Gord Munroe rounded up the top 5 with four faults in the jump off with No Doubt.
The Equi Cup series continues to encourage the development of horses and riders in competi- tive arenas. 2011 Show dates are being secured and the 2011 Oktoberfest show is booked for October 1st and 2nd at RCRA with the addition of a hunter day.
About the Equi Cup Series
A strong representation of 21 horse and rider combinations in the $1000 Mini Prix and 15 in the $5000 Grand Prix provided a great competitive atmosphere. Sid Acker and Valerie captured the Mini Prix. The pair jumped double clear with the fastest time in the jump off to secure the win. Landing in second place was Futi’s Calypso W ridden by Michelle Vandal. The pair was also clear but their time did not hold up to the class winner. Ushi ridden by Carole Minhinnick and La
In its third season the Equi Cup series has seen a steady increase in growth and development. Foundation of the series is based on providing high caliber competition and venues with afford- able entry fees. Each year the series looks to add new venues (2010 included Fox Run Stables in Troy, Sanmar in Elmira, Cupar Farms in Wood- stock and RCRA in Newmarket) so that horses and riders are exposed to a wider variety of loca- tions ensuring their ongoing development.
Bennville Quadrille - A Royal Success story
Elvis returned to the building — actually four Elvis’s on horse- back — at this year’s Royal Winter Fair in Toronto.
Four local dressage riders — Lynda Cooper, Elizabet Schilke, Sheila Dunbar, and Bronwyn Bar- low-Cash — competed in a four- horse musical ride known as a Quadrille, to a medley of Elvis hits. All four riders dressed as Elvis impersonators, complete with spark- ly jumpsuits and saddle pads; signa- ture dark glasses; and the distinctive Elvis pompadour covering their rid- ing helmets. The team won first and second place ribbons in the two night competition November 9 and
10, against three other teams.
All four advanced riders said the Quadrille was a fun change of pace from the usually more reserved world of dressage (precision riding, simi- lar to figure skating, with specific movements at different locations within a ring). The riders thank their sponsors: Ontario Veterinary College; Ferdinand and Anita Haupt; M2 Dressage; Sunrise Greenhouses of Vineland Station; Connect Equipment Corp., blacksmith Kevin Fair; Dunnville Veterinary Clinic; Paramount Saddlery; Pleasant Ridge Saddlery; and Black’s Equestrian Center for their generous support.
