40/ DECEMBER 2010 THE RIDER The Carriage Driver

Tri-County Carriage Association

A Summary of Events in 2010

Another driving season has come and gone for Tri-County Carriage Association. We have had some worthwhile events and we watched one of our longtime members show his stuff at the World Equestrian Games. Congratulations to Darryl Billing....job well done...

We held a spring show at Rockton Fair Grounds and the Fall show we took it to the new and improved Ancaster Fair Grounds. It was a good location with access to an office area, a fenced main ring and a second sand ring for practice. The cross coun- try, while not a path through the bush or anything, was a good course made up of the hazards that we have used for the last few years at the Canadian Carriage Driving Classic. We had only 11 entries register for the fall show and of them 10 competed. We had two former members return and we are pleased to welcome back Francis Uhran and Laurie Bruder. Of course we always have fantastic volunteers for both the spring and the fall and those of you that are always there to help. Thank you! Our thanks also to two ladies who came out to be our judges: In the spring Jane Lyndon was at Rockton for us and then, in the fall, Margerat Monnelly come all the way from Nepean, as the past president of Eastern Ontario Pleasure Driving Society (EOPDS). Thank You Both.

Then we headed to Witteveen’s Friesian Farm for the fall Fun Day drive.....on October 17th.....the weather was absolutely perfect. Thanks to Harry & Cecile for

having us. Most of you know that Harry started his car- riage driving career with Tri-County and over the years he has gone on to do wonderful things in the Carriage Driving world and he is the sponsor of the Gold Whip awarded to the high points achiever who has competed both spring and fall. This year Harry will present the pin to Jean McLean and her trusty pony “Thomas” There were a few faces missing for this event but most of those missing were just returning from the Games in Kentucky and I’m sure many were absolutely worn out. Ross and Avril Brown insisted they would

our competitors who were heading for Walnut Hill was a bonus! Our social drives at Ferguson Forest, Hawkridge, Mian Farm, Fid- dler’s Green and Phantom were all lots of fun and safe. So we got a little wet at Phantom....

We had three of our “youth” take advantage of our bursary program and they obviously all benefited from the instruction they received as they were all in the ribbons at Walnut Hill. Our adult competitors were not to be outdone by our youth and they, too, made our club proud by bringing home many ribbons and trophies from Walnut Hill as well as other smaller shows.

Our field trip to the RCMP Stables was another high- light of our year.

We have acquired some new members and I’m pleased to note that several

come and set up a cones course for everyone’s pleasure. Many had the opportunity to do the cross country course 2 or 3 times and they also could do the cones more than once. In fact Klaas Steenbeek and Diewwke Schuurmans did the cones so often the Friesian horse “IDZ”, with Diewwke as the whip, finished with a score of 47:09 and the fastest of the day. Our next event is our Annual General Meeting to

be held at the Rockton Fair Grounds Hall. Mark your calendar for Saturday, January 22.
