38/ DECEMBER 2010 THE RIDER

Centre Profile: Half Pint Hooves Ontario Therapeutic Riding Association

President: ManeLine

Sundance and Faline began “leading people to new horizons” in December 2008. While visiting resi- dential and adult day-away homes, people enjoyed the gentle healing presence of these miniature service horses. Residents were filled with curiosity and wonder as they felt the softness of their long winter coats. People reached out with laughter when they saw boots on their hooves or witnessed them stepping out of an elevator. Residents extended them- selves socially, sharing stories of farming and the role horses have played in their family life. For days following the visits people were still talking about the sense of joy and wonder they experienced with these

fantastic service animals.

After many months of prepara- tion guided by Deb Burt and Jane Pat- terson, Equine Facilitated Wellness and Learning (EFWL) was introduced to Sault St. Marie, Ontario through Half-Pint Hooves.

Half-Pint Hooves has partnered with community agencies developing equine-based programs in assisting clients with their therapeutic, recre- ational and educational needs. Their custom designed carts have made out- door events possible with rides along the waterfront and trails allowing people with special needs a unique experience while providing therapy. People with mobility challenges sud- denly have access to an innovative

form of recreation and therapy feeling at one with nature because of these horses. While holding onto the handle of a specialized horse harness, the visually impaired and the autistic are able to enjoy a safe recreational walk- about. Horse themed day camps and school classes have provided partici- pants unique opportunities for learn- ing and personal development. With their specialized equipment and ‘potty-trained’ horses, they are able to host the program activities on their site or the user’s site, making Half- Pint Hooves very accessible. Who would have thought that these little horses would have created such a large impact and improve the quality of life for so many people with special needs in their community!
