2010 AQHA Racing Conference & Challenge Championships

Several QROOI Board members attended the AQHA Racing Confer- ence, November 16 – 20 in New Orleans, Louisiana. All were actively participated in meetings and building relationships during the challenge races at ‘The Fairgrounds’.

On Wednesday a special medica- tion meeting was held at the Fair- grounds. How medication control, testing, and other aspects will affect our industry in the future were dis- cussed. Bob Broadstock and Rene Hunderup were invited guests at this meeting which had; the entire AQHA Racing Council; members of the Rac- ing Medication & Testing Consortium (RMTC,) Louisiana State University (LSU) and the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP.) Although discussion was held on testing laboratories and their accredita-

tion, the main topic of conversation was the apparent abuse of the therapeu- tic medication ‘clenbuterol’. It was very clear its abuse is a huge concern in our industry and is beginning to affect other breeds. The meeting focused on the extreme negative effects of long-term Clenbuteral use and various methods we can stop it. The group provided three ways of curbing clenbuterol abuse; 1.) establish therapeutic levels of clenbuterol to be used as thresholds for out of competi- tion testing; 2.) extend the withdrawal time for its use to 30-45 days - deter- mining the abuse is significantly increasing the ‘anabolic effect’ of clen- buterol, and a longer withdrawal time would remove the ‘anabolic’ reason for using the medication; and 3.) tracks should choose to ban clenbuteral use through a house rule. These findings

were presented to the entire ‘Racing Committee’ for its review the follow- ing day.

Thursday and Friday, the entire ‘AQHA Racing Committee’ – a group of approx 80 horsemen appointed to the committee by the AQHA Executive Committee – discussed the medication meeting among other items on the agenda. Again ‘clenbuterol’ abuse was a main discussion point and the Racing Committee took action. They voted in favour of asking the RMTC and AAEP to develop a set of therapeutic levels to be used as thresholds in out of compe- tition testing and to develop the thresh- old levels for ‘clenbuterol’ that would eliminate its use for the ‘anabolic effect’. Further, the committee passed a motion AQHA take the stance ‘clen- buterol’ not be used in racing beyond its intended therapeutic use and a 45-

day withdrawal period should be implemented. While these items still require AQHA Racing Council and AQHA Executive committee approval; the ‘Racing Committees’ approval shows AQHA horsemen recognize there is a problem and are taking action to fix it.

Among a list of other things dis- cussed by the committee was a propos- al for Second Career Race Horses. The subcommittee presented a program to acknowledge race horses that are active in barrel racing. The Racing Committee approved the program and the continuation of the Second Career subcommittee. This group will now spend time developing the details of the program for presentation at the 2011 AQHA Convention. Both Bob Broadstock and Erik Lehtinen serve on this subcommittee.

During an awards luncheon on Friday we received incredible news regarding one of our Ontario Quarter Horse industry people. Strategic Equine’s Vel Evans received the Mil- dred N. Vessels Special Achievement Award for her achievements within the industry throughout the year. Vel has been a significant driving force behind our growth in Ontario and was very surprised at the announcement. The QROOI extend our heart-felt congratu- lations to Vel Evans and her team at Strategic Equine.

If you have any questions regard- ing the conference please contact our office at qrooiheadoffice@gmail.com or (905) 426-7050.

Your QROOI Board will continue to represent Ontario at these and other industry development conferences in the future.
