Mayor of Hyndburn. Councillor Malcolm Pritchard. There’s a festive feeling in the air at the Mayor’s office at the moment. I don’t think Irene and I have ever eaten as many mince pies, and there’s more to come as we attend lots more Christmas parties in the coming weeks. We are really looking forward to visiting schools and watching their Christmas performances. November was a really busy month, especially Remembrance Sunday when Irene and I attended five Remembrance Sunday services and events in one day. It was heart warming to see so many people turn out to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. I’ve also been present at the opening of no fewer than three new stores in Accrington, Robertson’s Reef and Reptiles on Whalley Road, Store Twenty One on Broadway, Accrington and finally the new Tesco. Its great to see new businesses coming into the area and what’s more they each made a generous donation to the Mayor’s charity. Speaking of the charity we have been working our socks off organising events and I must send a big thank you to all my charity committee members for their hard work and dedication. Honorary Alderman and former Mayor, Sandra Hayes organised a great night at the Golden Cross pub, Oswaldtwistle which raised £470.00 for the charity. The landlord & landlady, Michael and Paula were great hosts and generously covered the cost of the disco. We are all working hard now on our Christmas Extravaganza which takes place in Accrington on Saturday 4th December 2010. There will be a reindeer parade on Broadway starting at 10.30 a.m. and a food and craft fair in the town hall all day. Over 30 stalls will be there selling lovely individual items so please come down and support the event. For any more information on our upcoming events, to buy tickets or to make a donation or even to invite the Mayor and Mayoress to an event you are holding please contact the Mayor’s secretary on the details below: Rachel Leatherbarrow, The Mayor’s Office, Hyndburn Borough Council, Scaitcliffe House, Ormerod Street, Accrington, BB5 2PJ 01254 380285 rachel.leatherbarrow@hyndburnbc.gov.uk Best Wishes, Malcolm.

There tend to be around ten people of four generations at my parents for Xmas lunch, each with their own foibles - some don't like Xmas pud, some don't like stuffing, and so on. For years, Mum would worry, worry, worry every Christmas Eve and Christmas morning - had she done enough potatoes? were there enough different desserts? Should she do another batch of stuffing? Should she do another choice of starter? She worried so much she didn't enjoy it, which meant neither did we. So one Christmas a few years ago, I made myself a complete pain. I weighed and measured everything on Christmas Eve - how much stuffing, how many potatoes for roasting, which desserts we did and so on. On Christmas day itself I made a note of what each person had for a starter, what they dished onto their plate and what they ate. I made a note of what wasn't eaten. I listed which desserts people had, and on Boxing Day I typed it all up onto Dad's PC, and put it into an obvious folder on the desktop. I printed a copy out and stuck it in the Christmas section of Mum's cookbook, where it would stay safe until next December. Mum thought it was a waste of time, but the next year when she started the questions, I had chapter and verse on the answers. We saved ourselves a load of work, as we didn't make the things that hadn't been eaten the year before (except for a small margin of error) and we saved a lot of worry. Of course, I made a note that year as well, to take account of kids growing up and so on, but it was a lot easier from then on, and we've done it every year since - what a difference! We pinched this article from a student on the internet, our opinion ???? Life’s too short.
