Hello again from the members of : The Rotary Club of Great Harwood and Rishton.
Literacy Project Four years ago we learned that the publishers, Usborne, would supply Rotary Clubs with dictionaries at a reduced price for distribution to schools. Forming a Literacy Partnership with local primary schools, the Club instigated a project to purchase cop- ies of the Usborne Illustrated Dictionary and to give one to each pupil completing their final year at Primary Schools in the two towns. We reviewed the scheme with our Partners earlier this year and concluded it would be more beneficial to give the dic- tionaries to the children at the beginning of the school year so that pupils and teaching staff could use it throughout the year. This meant we would have to buy nearly 500 books between June and September, and we needed some financial help. The Area Councils in Great Harwood and Rishton came to our aid and granted £300 each towards the cost and our two local County Councillors each obtained £200 from County Council funding. The children received their books on time and we are now working towards repeating the scheme in September 2011. So far we have given dictionaries to over 1,000 local children. To recognise the grants from the Councils, and to update our Literacy Partners, a Presentation Dinner was held at Sparth House Hotel last month. County, Borough and Area Councillors were invited, along with our Partners and other guests. After a buffet meal there was a progress report on the scheme, fol- lowed by presentations from Alison Turner, of the County Coun- cil Library Service, and Pam Holgate of ‘Pam’s Book End’ in Queen Street, Great Harwood. Both organisations have been strong supporters of the scheme and work with local schools to promote the interest of children in reading. Cheques were for- mally presented to the Club by Councillors David Mason, Harry Grayson, Miles Parkinson and Ciaran Wells. The Club had re- cently approved donations to Great Harwood Community Action Group, Rishton Festival and Rishton Prospects Group, so cheques were presented to these organisations. An interesting and enjoyable evening ended with short illustrations of other Rotary projects and the informal exchanges of ideas. Santa is Coming During December Santa will be touring the area in his sleigh and will be in the following areas between 6pm and 8pm: Great Harwood: Thursday 9th Harwood Bar, Tuesday 14th Park Lane, Tuesday 21st Edge Side Rishton: Friday 10th Petre Estate, Thursday 16th Esplanade There will also be daytime appearances at Morrisons, Aldi and High Street, Rishton.
