DEAR JOHN (12) In case you are unaware, I’m going to share a little trivia with you, Dear John was the film that knocked Avatar from the number 1 spot at the cinema after six consecutive weeks – no mean feat for a romantic film and not surprising when you find out it is brought to us by the same people responsible for the fabulous “Notebook”. So good was the Notebook that any film compared to it is going to have to be something special to reach the equal heights. Dear John (sadly) falls short.

John Tyree (Channing Tatum) is watching Savannah (Amanda Seyfried) from afar when her purse falls into the ocean. John dives into the ocean and retrieves it for her and the two begin bonding right away. Savannah invites him out with her friends for a night of partying and a beer, and after a few tries, he grudgingly accepts. He meets a few of her friends, including Alan (Braeden Reed) who has autism, and gets along with them famously.

The new couple starts hanging out more and more and eventually begin to date but they both know their time here isn’t forever. John has to leave at the end of the week to go back to the military and Savannah has to go back home as she was only here on spring break. The two spend all their time together and decide to write one another while they are gone to hopefully ease the heartache of being away from someone you just met and fell in love with. As time passes, they love one another more and more and eventually meet again but the circumstances are much different. Can love conquer all and let these two lovebirds be together or will the army and college keep them away from each other forever?

The film does have plenty of touching moments with messages on autism and of course love’s strength itself and the ending warrants a special mention. The notebook it isn’t but as I said it will be a special film that comes along to knock that one off its mantle – You ladies will love this, the men will sigh, but what would you expect? Tears?
