Now in our 17th year!

Thinking about...... Folic acid in pregnancy.

Folic acid is a vitamin that is required to make new cells in the body. Unfortunately the body does not store very much folic acid therefore a regular fresh supply in needed to keep us healthy. The need is especially great in pregnant women whereby folic acid is utilised by the developing fetus.

Folic acid can be found in many foods including green vegetables, potatoes and some bread and cereals which are fortified with folic acid. However, even if you have a good diet it is certainly beneficial to take folic acid supplements if you are planning a pregnancy. Once pregnant you should continue to take supplements for at least the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Research has shown that taking folic acid supplements reduces the risk of babies being born with spina bifida and cleft lip and palate. In addition, a recent study found there to be a significant decrease in the rate of premature labour and the delivery of premature infants in those mothers who take folic acid supplements for 1 year prior to conception.

For the majority of women a daily dose of 400 micrograms (0.4mg) is sufficient. However, if you have had a previously affected pregnancy or you or your partner have a spinal cord defect the dosage will be higher. This will be decided by your doctor. There are also certain medical conditions whereby the dosage will be increased by your doctor.

Do remember that supplements are not a substitute for eating a healthy well balanced diet.

Healthy eating is important for us all but especially for expectant mums. As soon as you know you are expecting, see your Midwife to receive accurate, professional guidance about a healthy diet for you and your developing baby.
