Corral Chatter WHAO Judge's Seminar

WHAO judges spent the day with Patti Carter - Pratt getting tips on being an educated and prepared judge. 20 judges and exhibitors gathered in Brantford to video judge trail, show- manship, horsemanship and equitation. "It was an informative and interesting day" claimed Ann - Marie Foster. Patti's friendly and knowledgeable presentation put all at ease to ask questions and provoke lively discussion. Her experiences from

judging world shows gave the participants incite to expect the unexpected, and how to handle some difficult situations. Over all , she stressed, be pre- pared, know your rules and go with what you believe in.

The WHAO participants had many quali- fied Paint, Quarter horse and Appaloosa judges. Comments from experienced and successful coaches like Robyn Storey added to the different perspectives a judge should consider when evalu- ating a class. The WHAO appreciates the time that our judge's spend to get educated.

People Power Ride for Public Trails By Mallory Hendry.

North Dufferin Agriculture and Community Taskforce (NDACT) will be hosting a trail ride to raise money for – and awareness of – Ontario’s public and natural resources.

On Saturday May 29, the People Power Ride for Public Trails – with the support of Rawhide Adventure Inc. – is focusing their efforts on stopping The Highland Group, a hedge fund group from Boston. They are looking to build a 2,400 acre Mega Quarry in Dufferin County, a size that would make it one of the largest mining operations in Canada. With plans to set extraction at 200 feet below the water table, this quarry will affect water supply to more than 1, 000, 000 peo- ple. City dwellers won’t escape unscathed either; Honeywood Loam will be threatened as well, which produces 60 percent of Metro Toronto’s potatoes.

Although local council has the authority to stop the defacing of the land by passing a bylaw, they have refused to take that step. NDACT is taking matters into its own hands by attempting to raise money and signatures to stop the destruction of land and homes that have stood in the area for generations. According to their website – where a

Approved Tentative Tentative

petition is also available to sign – “the repercus- sions of this mine could seriously and adversely affect the water, the landscape, the community, surrounding agricultural land use, and has poten- tial to cause disastrous environmental scenarios for decades.”

The power ride will start in Dundalk at noon and follow the abandoned railroad tracks to the Shelburne Fairgrounds. It costs $100.00 to “ride the rails” and an extra $15.00 to enjoy the People Power Gathering at the end of the road. The fes- tivities will include a barbeque, live music and local vendors. There will also be prizes that require you to be present to win. These include one “Range Riders Night” for four people worth $1000.00 each. Food and camping gear is includ- ed. Two “Wrangler Days” are available as well, which involve a four hour ride and dinner for four people, each worth $600.00. Finally there are three “Cowboy Up” rides for four, worth $400.00 each. These include a two hour ranch ride with lunch back at the ranch.

Registration forms and more information can be found at www.NDACT.com. The complet- ed form and cheque payable to NDACT can be sent to Rawhide Adventures, 638135 Prince of Wales Rd., RR”3 Shelburne ON. LON 1S5.
