and more impressively the best Canadian presence in the final results with four Canadians in the top ten. David feels that the even- ters are producing results that the country can believe in. “With a proven 60% increase in the number of top ten finishes in FEI competitions of all levels Canada has created a base to be able to stand on” he comments.

Finishing fifth with no jumping or time penalties 22 year old Stephanie Rhodes – Bosch from Sum- merland, B.C. superseded her pinnacle goal of win- ning Young Riders. Stephanie has owned her horse, Port Authority, since he was six years old and has brought him up the lev- els herself. When asked about the cross country course she smiles “Clean and fast was the plan. My first four star was pretty awesome, I was more ner- vous on Thursday for the dressage than I was this morning but a 52 in dres- sage was my personal best. “

team member Selena O’hanlon was happy with her ride on Columbo. “ Despite slipping twice in the warm up on cross coun- try day he didn’t slip once on course. I was really

happy. My goal was to go clear and make the time and he always goes as well as his mother can ride him on that day. “ Selena is hopeful for a Canadian team spot for the Alltech

Nicole Shinton Wins at Gold Coast Dressage Finale

Wellington, Florida – Canada’s Nicole Shinton of Uxbridge, ON, won the Adult Amateur Prix St. Georges at the Gold Coast Dressage Association Grand Finale dressage competi- tion held Saturday, April 17, at the Jim Brandon Center in Wellington, FL.

Riding GB Classic, Shinton earned a score of 64.211% from judge Gary Rockwell to take victory over a 15-horse starting field. On Sunday, April 18, the pair finished second in the Adult Amateur Intermediaire I com- petition with a score of 62.895%. GB Classic is a 16- year-old Rhinelander gelding that Shinton purchased ‘sight unseen’ from Germany two years ago.

“While GB Classic was the only horse I competed with, I also took my new horse, Don- natelli, along for the ride,” said Shinton, 37, of her newly acquired eight-year-old Swedish Warmblood gelding by Don Schufro. “He is a superstar at home, and I wanted to get him out and see how he would react to being at a horse show. He was perfect, and I am looking forward to debuting him at the Prix St. Georges level later this year.”

Shinton, who is based half the year in Anthony, FL, has now concluded her winter show season. She will next compete at the CDI Lexington, KY, from May 27-30 on her way home to Uxbridge, ON.

She and her husband, Alan Shinton, own Green- brier Farms, a 160 acre eventing facility in Uxbridge, ON.

After winning the Mitsubishi Motors Bad- minton and the Land Rover Burghley Four Star events in succession Great Britain’s rider Oliver Tow- nend had his hopes set high on being the second only rider to complete the Grand Slam of Eventing at Rolex. Winning Rolex would mean the third four star event in succession taking home the Grand Slam prize of 350,000.00 It was a dis- appointing day for Oliver who after huge efforts to get to Kentucky from Europe, including a 1700.00 Euro taxi ride from Paris to Madrid, due to the flight cancellations from volcanic ash in the air, had his hopes crushed by a fall at fence 20 “The hollow” with his mount Ashdale Cruise Master . Neither the horse nor the rider sustained any injuries, possibly averted by the new inflatable vest that Oliver was wearing.

British rider William Fox-Pitt, who had been the leader after dressage on his horse Cool Mountain, rode a clear cross country and a clear show jumping course maintaining his first place posi-

tion and winning a new Rolex watch along with the Rolex 2010 Champion title. After cross country William was relieved that it was over “I wasn’t feeling my best in the morning of

cross country but the horse was and you don’t want to just throw away a top spot when you are lucky enough to get it.”

Chuckling after the win William remembers

that morning when Rolex three day event organizer Jane Atkinson, who is retir- ing after this year, com- mented to him “isn’t it about time you won this thing”.

A former three day event- ing competitor, Shinton was named the 2004 Adult Amateur Intermediate Rider of the Year by the United States Eventing Association, a remarkable feat for a Canadian in such a highly competitive division. Shinton was also named to the 2005 Canadian Eventing Team Long List with two horses, Pamela and The Grey Pony, before a rotational fall in 2007 forced her to change her focus from eventing to dressage.
