MAY 2010 THE RIDER /51 The Carriage Driver “Drivers know when they get it right”: Bill Lower gives third driving clinic at Beaverwood Farm By Brooklynn A. Welden

Bill Lower’s driving clinic, hosted by Beaverwood Farm, Hillsburgh, ON for a third straight year, was graced by beau- tiful weather, making the day perfect for drivers and horses alike. Mary said that she enjoyed watching Bill’s body-language as he imitated what he wanted the horse to do. He almost appears to do a “slow motion dance in the centre of the ring. It really gets his point across.” I felt I learned what I needed to do to improve my driving and met my goal going in to the clinic, which was to move my gelding fully into the bridle, said Mary, adding, “I am motivated to go

one of her homebred mares, Beaverwoods Raindrop. Kilby Brunner-DeForest, the youngest driver at age five, had a thirty-minute private with Bill. Kilby worked on half-circles, teardrops, and transitions, driving her pony, another of mom Kirsten’s homebreds, Beaverwoods Puffyn.

“Moving forward” was Bill’s recommendation to Cynthia Zalewski, driving her Paint mare Kitia. Cyn- thia, a returning driver to Bill’s clinics, took a semi-pri-

vate lesson, concentrating on generating Kitia’s anima- tion and sparkle.

Faith Clarkson also took two lessons, driving Bar- ton, her 7-year old Newfoundland pony gelding and Gala, a rising 4-year old Newfoundland/Welsh filly. Bill, she said, is a “terrific clinician—he watched every- one warm up for the first few minutes while he observed and then he knew what the driver was working on and would make suggestions. If his recommendations did not seem to be effective, he drove the animal himself to see what was happening, and then made additional rec- ommendations. Bill’s teaching style includes lots of great encouragement and support, so drivers know when they get things right.”
