MAY 2010 THE RIDER /61 Ontario Clydesdale
Breeder Brings Canada To Scotland
By Kelly Bowers
The 149th National Stallion Show for Clydesdales in Stirling, Scotland took place on March 6th. Lee Smith (Brelee Clydesdales) from Lynden, ON decided to make the trip and compete when friend and business partner, John Anderson (Redcastle Clydesdales) from Arbroath, UK, made the suggestion. His travel companion would be their impressive 14 month old Clydesdale colt, Brelee Majestic Finnigan, a.k.a., Finn.
Who is Finn? His sire: Freedom Royal Majestic by Francois Desharnais, St. Christophe d’Arthabaska, PQ and Dam: Brelee Princess Ainsley of Brelee Clydes- dales, an exceptional cart horse and the heart of Brelee Clydesdale Mare four horse hitch. Always excited to be the centre of attention in the show ring, Finn has inherit- ed her wonderful personality and attitude. Sadly, the mare passed away shortly after giving birth to him in Feb. 2009.
Finnigan is no stranger to success in the show ring. Here, at home, he was named All-Canadian Stallion Foal for 2009 with a total of 9 first place awards in the 2009 show season including 1st Clydesdale Senior Stallion Foal, Champion Clydesdale Stallion Foal, and Supreme Champion Clydesdale Foal at The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, Toronto, ON. He also placed 1st at The Rockton World’s Fair and at The Lindsay Central Exhi- bition.
At the Stirling show, Finn competed against 8 other colts, mostly from Ireland and Scotland, in “Colt Foaled in 2009” class. Despite being a new comer, he earned the coveted first place. Once the ribbons were counted, Finn had also been awarded Reserve Male Champion and Cawdor Cup Reserve Champion. Lee and John were proud of the young horse and thrilled with the show results.
Lee is back in Ontario but the colt is still abroad. While in Scotland, Finn will put his best hoof forward once again at The Highland show in June. Exact plans of when to bring him home to Canada have not been finalized at this time.
Ontario yearling, Brelee Majestic Finnigan wins at The 2010 National Stallion Show in Stirling, Scotland.
