Horse Lovers Flock to Can-Am Weather and newly redesigned show bring the crowds

By Mallory Hendry.

For Ross Miller’s first time organizing Can Am, it went off without a hitch. Well, almost.

“We did move the parking to the north side, which was much better Saturday and Sunday, but Friday there was a learning curve,” Miller says. “We purchased 45 more signs by noon and by the end of the day everyone under- stood the benefits.”

Despite being unsure what to expect with some of the changes, which besides the parking includ- ed Home Hardware mini extravaganzas throughout the day instead of a big one in the evening that cost extra, Miller is proud to say this year Can Am set a record for most attendance ever on Friday and Satur- day.

Todd Cressman from Home Hardware says he was very pleased with turn

around at the booth. It was the best Can Am he’s seen in the five years he’s been involved, and he suspects the amazing weather may have played a role in upping the attendance. “Everybody seemed to be getting ready to get their horses out,” Cressman says. “It seemed to the whole theme of the week-

end; everybody was happy to think about spring and get out there.”

Along with the beauti- ful weekend temperatures, Amber Marshall sure didn’t hurt Can Am when it came to drawing a crowd. The Heartland actress showed up at her home- town event Saturday for autograph signing. Miller

was surprised by the num- ber of people from London who came out to see her. “She spent time with all the young people,” he says. “She was very per- sonable, not just signing her name. She took the time to chat with them.” Other horse-world celebrities were in the building as well. Miller

was really glad to see two national team members Cindy Ishoy and Selena O’Hanelon, and credits them for drawing people from different disciplines. Can Am has been western in the past, he explains, and he thinks it’s wonderful to see all disciplines working together. Miller also sin- gles out Camilla Willing, who won the Wind Rider Challenge on a pasa fino horse, which was interest- ing because it’s not a main- stream breed.

“Everything with the competition went great,” Willing says. “It was on time, it was organized, the gate people were really nice and helpful. Everyone was positive, cheerful, helpful.”

Willing says she hopes they continue doing the Wind Rider Challenge because she had a lot of positive feedback.

The weekend turned out well for the trailer deal- ers as well. Since Quartera- ma no longer takes place in March, Can Am has become the premiere trailer show for eastern Canada, and this year gave people a chance to browse the more
