12/ MAY 2010 THE RIDER
Volunteer With The Ontario Standardbred Adoption Society
by Kelly Bowers
In the spirit of Volunteer Week, April 18th - 24th, The Ontario Standardbred Society is actively seeking volunteers to work with post-race or unraced standardbred horses in their care. There are sever- al positions which need to be filled requiring a variety of skills and experience. But the one thing all volunteers require is enthusiasm, com- passion and commitment.
Good horse knowledge is essential for the safety of both humans and animals. And everyone needs to have their own transportation. One position required in many areas of Ontario is that of “OSAS Guardian”. OSAS assigns a guardian to every adopted horse. This person travels to adoptive homes as a conduit between adoptive care givers and the OSAS. Communication skills
and plenty of general knowl- edge are necessary to answer questions about training, health and care etc. A guardian is there to watch over the horses and assist the caregiver do the best job they can.
Experience the beauty of the Oak Ridges Moraine from the comfort of our 1870's farmhouse. Enjoy a leisurely country breakfast on the veranda then ride or drive directly into the Ganaraska Forest. Spacious box stalls and turnout for your horse and country hospitality for you. Explore the nearby towns: theatre, antiques, fine dining, and the most beautiful scenery in southern Ontario. Relaxing rural life only an hour east of Toronto. Now available at Kendal Hills, "The Hen House" a self-sufficiency bunkhouse for guests desiring a more rustic independent experience.
Another position which currently needs to be filled is “Volunteer Rider”. These equestrians must have riding experience and be competent in the saddle, as they will be actively riding and exercising horses presently in care where they don’t have the opportunity to be ridden. Rid- ers must also be over 18 years of age with their own transportation. Campbellville and Mt. Forest are areas which especially need Volun- teer Riders at this time. If this sounds interesting, swap some of your valuable time and energy for the opportunity to work with and bond with wonderful horses and caring people. You will also be rewarded with the unwaivering feeling of fulfill- ment from doing something worthwhile, and the warm fuzzy feeling that comes from giving of yourself and doing a good thing.
