28/ MAY 2010 THE RIDER Canadian Championships June 30 – July 4
An excellent venue either as a competitor or a spectator, everyone is welcome.
Opening Ceremonies are sched- uled on June 30th celebrating the com- ing together of provincial teams and individual athletes from across Cana- da. This bi-annual tradition in Long Distance Riding is alternately hosted by eastern and western provinces with Ontario previously playing host in 1985, 1994 and 2002.
At the National Level, long dis- tance riding involves three distinct disciplines. Each one requires the horse and rider to follow a marked trail with compulsory veterinary check points at intervals, and especially at the finish.
Endurance – involves speed with the first horse crossing the line and pass-
ing the final veterinary check being the winner. Thursday, July 1st, is the start of the Endurance Championship 100 mile/160km FEI CEI*** plus Open competition, a 75 mile/170km FEI CEI** plus a CEIYR** and Open competition, and a Championship 50 mile/80km FEI CEI* plus a CEIYR* and Open competition.
Ride and Tie – is a race, but involves both riding and running with a team being two people and one horse. The person riding gets ahead and ties the horse and runs on, while their partner who is running reaches the horse, mounts and catches up and passes their partner and repeats the process. The first team with both runners and horse to cross the finish line are the winners. Friday, July 2nd, will be a Championship 20 mile/32km plus a 10
mile/16km Open competition.
Competitive Trail – involves com- pleting the trail within an exact time frame with the horse judged to exhibit the fittest condition being the winner. Saturday, July 3rd, is the start of the Competitive Trail Championship Two Day 80 mile/128km with 40 miles being ridden each consecutive day.
Additional Competitions – available over the weekend will be –
Saturday, July 3rd, both a 25 mile/40km Mileage Ride and a 25 mile/40km Set Speed demonstration competition. Introducing this popular event, the Set Speed will be run in conjunction with the Mileage Ride, allowing those wishing to enter both events an opportunity to compare the scoring methods, earn completion in

Practise all the things the vet will do at a ride on a regular basis (like the Horse Health Check). Trot out in hand, straight lines and trot large circles with your horse in both directions. Encour- age your horse to stand quietly for vet- ting. Ask others at your barn to pretend they are the vet and touch your horse all over, listen for gut sounds, take pulse, do capillary refill test, etc. Does your horse tie to the trailer? Does your horse respect portable electric fencing? Does your horse behave around other strange horses in close proximity? Do YOU have good manners (i.e. know about trail etiquette?).
Does your horse have good brakes and steering when you ride? What would you do if your car didn’t slow

Animal Awareness is an exciting new website for animal lovers that promotes home care health programs. Eight Signs of Dog Illness and Eight Signs of Horse Illness each discuss what signs to look for in an ill animal, and what massage strategies can be used for prevention and early detection. After reading the exten- sive free article, an individual can purchase one of the recommended mini-DVDs for additional visual guidance.
Hourdebaigt suggests that a good prevention measure is having an animal receive a physical exam periodically. Daily home care including massage, stretch- ing and hydrotherapy modalities will help your animal live a long and happy life. “Attending to your animal with a simple home-care program is you best pre- vention and therefore your best protection,” expressed Hourdebaigt. “This daily care will strengthen the bond between you and your animal. You will love doing it and your animal will love you for it!”
