ParaSport Ontario, we are pleased to offer grants of up to $500 to help our coaches and officials travel to WindReach Farm for the CPEDI3*.

Candidates are required to attend an education session with members of the Ground Jury where they will have the opportunity to ask questions, and benefit from their experience and expertise. Successful applicants will also be required to volunteer a mini- mum of 4 hours on the grounds at some point over the three days of competition.

Applicants must be OnTRA members in good standing. The application deadline is April 30, 2010.

Ontario is hosting Canada’s only CPEDI3* this year. This is our chance to seize this opportunity and send several of our coach- es and officials who are active in Para Equestrian or developing a Para Equestrian program to this rare event to observe riders, con- verse with other coaches and learn from international officials. OnTRA is developing a long range plan to help our Ontario Para Equestrian riders, coaches and officials. In partnership with

Para Equestrian Clinic a Resounding Success

A very eager group of 25 coaches, riders and officials gath- ered at CARD on Saturday March 27 for an opportunity to learn more about how to help get our riders to Para Equestrian competi- tions. The group was intentionally kept small to encourage dis- cussion amongst participants and clinicians and to promote more of a “fireside chat” atmosphere for everyone.

To begin the day, Dr. Ophelia MacDonald gave a brief outline of what it means when a rider is classified at a given grade before retreating to a private room where 5 people were newly classified or reclassified for competition. Lorraine Stubbs (EC S and FEI I judge) and Margaret Murdoch (FEI STDR X steward) then went on to discuss the rule book and recent changes to the rules specific to Para Equestrian. After lunch, Viki LaCombe gave a brief histo- ry and overview of OnTRA and OnTRA’s plans for promoting Para Equestrian in the province of Ontario. Lorraine then went through each of the dressage tests (which are all new this year) and pointed out differences to some of the scoring. The day concluded with a brief introduction to the RDSP product found at TD Bank, and some general conversation while observing several rides from the last Olympics in Beijing.

Special congratulations to Jody Schloss and Tenacious Dyna- mite for an outstanding win on March 28, 2010 at ONTRA’s Spring Gold Show.

more than to have her very own pony to love. As time went on with the help of her parents and a trusted coach Katelyn began the search for a pony that she could call her own.

Katelyn’s coach had a quiet older Appaloosa mare in mind. Yet, when Katelyn arrived at the barn to meet the mare, she could not help but notice a cute chestnut pony with a large white blaze. “Stanley” was a retired show pony was on stall rest as he had broken his stifle six month’s earlier. Unfortunately he would only be useful as a companion animal and would not be suitable for riding. Stanley’s original prog- nosis was poor, and frankly he was lucky he did not have to lose his life over his broken leg. Stanley was also a feisty pony who was not very fond of chil- dren. Katelyn, who is equally feisty, would not take no for an

ing for. Stanley was given a clean bill of health from the vet, and finally Stanley, with Kate- lyn on his back, could return to light exercise. While Stanley would never jump again, this was still wonderful news! Initially, in the riding ring, the two were not the dynamic duo everyone had hoped for. Stanley could be stubborn and difficult for Katelyn to ride at times. Luckily Katelyn was just as stubborn, and would not give up on her beloved pony. After many months spent practicing, Katelyn and Stanley were final- ly a team, and they began enter- ing local schooling hunter and dressage competitions. Their success did not come easily at first, particularly in dressage, where Katelyn determined their success by counting the number of rings from the Judge’s bell. However, each horse show

Stand By Me

Katelyn Hall-Mathews had forever dreamed of winning the Kentucky Derby. As a young student at SARI Riding for Disabled, Katelyn showed everyone how truly talented she was. Riding seemed to come naturally to Katelyn and her love of horses was a true pas- sion. As Katelyn moved through the levels of the SARI program she wanted nothing

answer and she felt that Stanley was the perfect match for her. She entered his stall and began to pet him and the two instantly bonded. This was the match made in heaven everyone had been looking for!

Katelyn patiently stood by Stanley during his recovery. After two months of hand walk- ing and daily turnout, Katelyn got the news she had been wait-
