The Ultimate Outdoor
Sanctuary
I am always on the prowl for unique outdoor elements for the patio. Whether
you have a small backyard or a large plaza, the options are limitless. I have put
together five unique items that have the ability to transform an outdoor space
into something much more special. Make that outside space as livable as any
other room and start enjoying!
(1) Synthetic woven patio furniture - The days of heavy and uncomfortable iron patio
sets are now history with innovative breakthroughs in frames, synthetic materials that can
withstand rain or sun for any climate and new advances in outdoor fabrics. I have outlined
a group that I have used in several design projects and these products offer something for
everyone. While the entire collection is made of the same durable, weather-resistant materials,
certain pieces are space-conscious, some are more transitional which can pair with traditional or contemporary styles
and lastly, some give the ultimate feel and look of a five-star spa to give you the ability to replicate the “Golden Door”
experience in your own home. This group is a line I offer through House.Boi. The prices vary, but are reasonable.
The first, is a five-piece table and chair set which is comfortable, attractive and best of all… the chairs slide in around
the table when not in use to create a sleek, neat and space-conscious element. This set retails around $1,258.
A second piece in this group is the spa-like bed. This is a huge trend in outdoor living for the ultimate in luxury and
entertaining. While large in size and typically requiring a larger patio space, this outdoor day bed with cover can make for
an amazing poolside-style cabana or just a fun spot to chill
after a long day.
The last item is a transitional sofa piece with outdoor
cushions. This presents a number of other options such as
chairs, coffee tables and even sectional that can be added
on to accomodate your space—the perfect design to
create the ultimate outdoor living room!
(3) The non-plastic-look fountain - There are now some great fountains
that are not overly pricey and made of poured concrete, slate and other stones
that look natural and elegant. They are also made of materials that will hold
up to full sun exposure for years. Most of these fountains require no water
source as they re-circulate with a pump, so all that is needed is access to an
electrical outlet. The versions shown retail for about $500. I have found some
nice versions at Z Gallerie at good price points.
(2) Outdoor area rugs - These rugs are the best way of all to anchor any type of a
furniture grouping, be it a dining set or lounge seating area. With various patterns,
sisals and solids from neutral to vivid color options, any look desired can be carried
outdoors. This should be a fun way to either carry your inside look out for a seam-
less transition and can also give you the opportunity to play with your outdoor
space and create something fresh and different. For a dining area, the rug needs
to be large enough, not just for the table, but the majority of the chairs around the
table if possible. As for a seating area, the edge of the rug should go under the front
legs of your sofa and be large enough to accommodate a coffee table. Find these at
Cost Plus World Market ranging from $50 to $100 depending on size.
