checking your laptop while you’re playing! I think the art of DJing is not on a
laptop.”
For those of us who are aspiring to become a successful DJ, Oakenfold offers
this bit of personal wisdom. “My advice is to be original. Be ahead of the curve and
work very hard—your time will come. Also, what I say to give guidance and help
to young DJs is in my authorized biography. There’s no better way than putting it
in a book and explaining to people how I got from where I was to where I am. To
try and help. That’s what it’s about.” One of the more innovative musical creations
from Paul Oakenfold is a dance track called “Southern Sun.” Mentioning this song
to Oakenfold, he looked back on creating this and says, “ I was in New Orleans and
I was heading toward the airport. We took more of a colonial route to the airport.
The sun was dropping and that’s where the inspiration came from to write that
song.” You can also sense that scenario just listening to “Southern Sun.”
“Southern Sun” was released in 1999. Ten years later, how does Oakenfold feel
about the transformation of his career over the years? “You know, I started DJing
and learned my way around the studio. I like producing. But I mainly score film
now. I scored four movies last year and one game. I spend a lot of time in that area.
I scored a movie called SwordFish with John Travolta and Halle Berry. I also worked
“Outside of the clubs or festivals…
I played on the Great Wall in China.”
on Collateral, Shrek Two, The Matrix Reloaded and Bourne Identity.”
A possibly little-known fact about DJ Paul Oakenfold is his love for the culinary
arts. It could have been a chef’s hat for him as opposed to a set of headphones
every night. He explains his love for cooking and says, “I am absolutely a quali-
fied chef. I studied for four years to be a chef. Now, I have friends over and I cook
for them when I can.” Let’s just say that Paul Oakenfold would surely be missed
by many had he chosen a different career path. His well-known skills will be
out in full force for one night here at Harrah’s Rincon Casino where he will be
performing on Friday, April 17. “I’m looking forward to that. It’s a good crowd
and we’re bringing a touch of what we do in Vegas to San Diego. I’ll be playing
some new tracks from my albums, some remixes I’ve done of some familiar stuff.
It should be a good show.”
